Help!! speedo converter wiring

Post by nigelginny » Fri Feb 08, 2008 7:01 pm

Hi, ive purchased a speed converter for my bongo and the white dials, fitted the dials and they look brilliant, i thought that at the same time i would fit the converter but after removing the speedo assembley i was a little confused with the wiring, it looks like it goes to the right hand connector (looking at the front of the dials) but what wires? im sure ive seen the diagram on here somewhere but i cant seem to find it now.
so pleeeease can someone help, i know that on the converter the red goes to the live and the black goes to the earth i can find these with my multimeter but not sure which plug, the thing that s doin me is the signal wire from the gearbox to the speedo head can anyone help?

The speedo feed from the gearbox is blue & white lead into rear of instrument panel. You cut that lead, insert the convertor & connect up the + & -. Good luck

Nigel - I couldn't honestly tell you - its a long while since I had the speedo out. If there's more than one blue & white lead, you could try cutting them one at a time & seeing which one stops the speedo.

Hopefully someone else will be able to point you in the right direction.

Speedo conversion:

Disconnect the car battery and carefully remove the speedometer assembly.

Take a CK-UN-09 Converter and crimp 3 M3 eyelet terminals onto the ends of the RED, GREEN and BLUE wires, crimp a male bullet terminal onto the end of the YELLOW wire.

Screw the RED wire to the bottom left speedometer mounting screw at the rear of the instrument panel marked IGN.

Screw the GREEN wire to the top right speedometer mounting screw marked SP-.

Screw the BLUE wire to the bottom right speedometer mounting screw marked SP+.

Locate the middle plug and cut the 3rd wire from left, Blue/White wire about 3cm away from connector. Insulate the connector end of this wire and connect the YELLOW Converter wire to the loom end of the cut wire.

The GREY converter wire is not used.

Using a cable-tie strap the Converter to the loom then refit the instrument panel and test.

You would be better fitting a mazda 626 speedo rather than the convertor  Once we removed the convertor and had the 626 speedo fitted, no more erratic gear changes and accurate m.p.h. and miles travelled

speedo snags

Post by ScottyH » Sun Feb 17, 2008 2:22 pm

As a complete idiot when it comes to techie stuff...my speedo tells me how fast I am going as the face was changed to MPH from KMPH but... the two dials that clock up total km travelled and trip counter have suddenly stopped working and are jammed. Two things: is it likely that I have been duped and my beloved Bongo has been tampered with? and can it be fixed easily? I still get a speed readout and my rev counter, fuel gauge etc are all still working fine.

that somtimes happens when someone has altered the clocks, and not put them back together properly. as said above track down a GA5R speedo, the are a perfect fit and read mph and clock up in mph, you can get them out of mazda 626, and mx5 or 6 i think, i got mine from a 626, just make sure it says GA5R on the face plate. phone around the scrap yards, or email people breaking them on ebay.
