service costs

Post by MONDO-BONGO » Sat Jan 05, 2008 1:16 pm

Having driven company cars for years I am very ignorant about vehicle maintenance. I have read several fact sheets and forum messages about servicing but just wanted to clarify a couple of things.

It seems that a 'basic service' ought to cost in the region of £160 including parts and a cam belt change about £60 plus service kit about £70. Although I notice that one member had been charged £300 for a service. I'm not certain what the difference is between a 'basic service' and a 'full service'. My Bongo has done 93,000Km and has no service record so I feel inclined to pay as much as I have to now and get the whole lot done to be on the safe side.

Calling into garages, I have been quoted £190 and £200 for the service and am waiting for people to get back to me about the cam belt.

It would be good to have a thread where members list the garages they use and how much they are charged. Maybe this isn't possible for legal reasons? Sorry if this is all well covered in previous posts...if it is, a link would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks NeilT,
I have found the replacement schedule in the fact sheets but this doesn't say which of these will be included in a 'basic' or 'full' service and what price I should expect to pay.
Cheers

Putting your location in your profile would help others to help you. I know you put Cornwall in your first post, but not on the next.

As i understand it, an interim service consists of an Oil/filter change, air filter change. This should cost in the region of £50 If the garage supplies the parts.

A major service should consist of a cambelt change,oil/filter change, air filter replaced, fuel filter replaced(i'd probably replace the glowplugs too). This should cost around £160 - £180.

People have different expectations on what an interim and a major service actually consists of,I'd ask the garage to check all fluid levels (auto box, diffs, rad, brake fluid, power steering fluid etc)brake pads, and discs...

If you asked the garage to check everything,i'd expect to pay a little more for the time involved to do this.
