"Starting ok.... then losing power" It's come back
Bongo started ok this morning. Got 30 yards then the engine slowly cut out....
5 minutes of turning over the engine got intermittent starting results but no power. Just like the thing was running out of fuel again. Exactly what happened last time... http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... hp?t=16085
Finally started up and drove a further 50 yards then cut out again. Then started again eventually and drove a further 100 yards perfectly until dying again.
5 minutes later started again and drove 15 miles to work without missing a beat. Hmmmmm......
Have cleaned the banjo filter and changed fuel filter 2 weeks ago and have done over 500 miles since including starting in freezing conditions several times. Temp outside today about 7 degrees C.
Where to next?

I wonder if there is air in the fuel lines?
I had a similar problem once with my car,but it was worse, insofar that it wouldn't even start.
I'd inadvertantly ran it dry of diesel ( gauge had packed up,didn't drop below a quarter) After re-fuelling, it just would not start.
When the r.a.c. came out, i cranked the engine, whilst the mechanic loosened each injector,till fuel sprayed out,then re-tightened it.
I paused for a few minutes between each injector bleed, as the starter motor was getting hot.
It would appear that the last injector that was bled, was the cause of the problem.
Had no problems since. If you decide to do this bfb,its a two man job.

not on a diesel errm no .......turned out to be the distributer, not sayin it would be tho
It's going to be fuel or air. First step would be to check fuel at the injectors as BDC suggests. Not sure why a 2-man job though. Also check all pipes that carry fuel between the pump and injectors for splits/holes. Also does your fuel filter have a push button gizmo on the top? These can fail with a split diaphragm etc letting in air - worth a check. If fuel looks ok then check the air lines for blockages.

These are the worst kind of problems in my opinion bfb...The intermittent ones,that simply will not rear their ugly heads when under scrutiny from a mechanic...
You can bet your cuddly bear uniform that if you phoned the r.a.c. out, by the time they arrived the bongo would run perfectly,and make you out a liar...

I would plum for a full service. Also see if your garage can inspect the inside of your fuel tank.
I am wondering if the problems are caused by sludge,muck,sh**e in the system when you ran the fuel so low.
There could be crap in the sediment bowls and if you corner a little quicker than normal, or go over a bump, it could dislodge and be passed back into the system.
I am also wondering if your driveway is on a slope, or where you park your Bongo is, it could be picking up crap that way?
Just a thought.

Bob my husband has been having the same problem with his and last week got so fed up he put the bongo into mazda in Inverness. His problem started just after changing the fuel filter. It turns out that the filter was contaminated and now that it has been changed again is running fine. He has also been advised to ad an additive and use either Bp or shell fuel as the additive in them help keep the injectors clean. I hope this helps.

Hi Karl,
Yes, I park the Bongo on a right side to left down slope each evening. About a 6 inch drop. But last night parked it the other way round (left to right drop) and still had problems (possibly worse) again this morning (8.30 am)....
But when it eventually ran right I got the 15 miles to work with no problems. Acceleration etc were ok.
I tried running the van in the (flat) works car park about 5pm this evening (I'm still at work now) and Bongo started and ran for a few minutes perfectly without me touching the accelerator. I could hear a relay clicking on and off though (temp outside about 10 celcius)
Interestingly though, I've had the problem about 5 times now over the last month and it has only ever happened to me after parking the Bongo overnight outside my house on the slope I mentioned earlier.....
And to Audrey....
I run a veg mix and therefore haven't put injector cleaner into the fuel tank since I bought the Bongo back in May. Not sure if I should (or can) because of the veg oil.....? Can anyone tell me any reason why I shouldn't as I actually have a dozen bottles of the stuff I got free from a Wurth sales rep?
For the other bits of advice I won't have the time to do anything else until Friday......
