speedo converter chip removal

hi
whats involved in removing a speedo converter chip?
how many wires are there and are they easy to disconnect and what then needs reconnecting once the chip is removed?

I've just done mine, literally 10 minutes ago ! On mine there was just four wires connected, 12v supply and earth (red and black respectively from the convertor box) spliced onto wires at the back of the dash pod and blue and brown from the convertor box which intersected the speed signal wire (blue/white on original bongo wiring). Took about 10 minutes to do start to finish. I presume, like me your changing the speedo faceplate instead.

I feel a bit more confident about tackling it now.
I've actually got a speedo from a Mazda 626 that I am going to fit so I should end up with miles on the milometer/tripmeter as well as the speedo.

Hi dickandjill,

Surely if you have a chipped speedo, you should already have miles on the mileometer? Mine has.

I thought it was only the ones where the speedo face has been changed that still had kms on the odometer.

That's what i thought... if a 626 dial is used, and the speedo chip is disconnected, then it starts to read im km's again surely?

With speedo chip it reads speed and milometer in miles and mph.The speedo chip is getting replaced because its hard to read at low speed.
With a new speedo face the milometer would read in km, which I don't want, so by changing to 626 speedo I will end up with speed in mph and milometer in miles and the speed will be easier to read as the speedo only goes up to 140mph.
626 speedo only cost £5 from the scrapyard cheaper than a new speedo face and as far as I'm aware won't need recalibrating.

The 626 speedo reads in m.p.h. I had my chipped speedo replaced by Clogger, it reads M.P.H. accuratly and also miles travelled correctly, I have checked it with a measured mile and spot on :wink: I always had problems with a twitchy speedo, now replaced by 626 it is behaving :)

Oh right, i see... I'm by no means an expert in such things, but i thought that the speedo chip altered the speed/odometer electronically,therefore i assumed that removal of the device would automatically revert back to reading in km's...

I guess this isn't the case if the retro fitting of the clocks is from a mph reading clock originally...

Thanks for clearing that up, i'd get one myself,but i have white dials fitted on mine. The chip is still incorporated,but up till now its behaved itself.

When I imported my bongo the speedometer was chipped and now it reads in MPH and the odometer in miles. The dial has only one set of numbers on it. This is ok for driving in the UK but I am planning to go to France and Spain early next year and I have to do something to read kilometers on the speedo. I think the answer is to get a 626 speedo and remove the chip. Unfortunately I am having pproblems sourcing one . Srapyards around Brighton are conspicuous by their absence. Can anyone help? Another thought I've had is perhaps to fit a two way switch to cut out the chip and connect the original cable to the speedo. The switch could be operated on the channel crossing. Has anyone done this? Would the speedo be calibrated to Kilometers? Would it be legal? Or too stupid? Of course a note of the odometer reading would have to be taken every each time it was switched to keep a record for servicing schedule. Any help gratefully received.

I fitted a 626 speedo - really chuffed with the result.
I removed the MPH /KPH face which i fitted for the MOT and would have let you have it for nowt but I seem to have binned it :( Someone else might have one after doing the 626 conversion.
I agree that your best long term move is to fit a 626 which has an MPH /KPH face

BDC - If you find a 626 speedo change the clock face over to your white dial one , remove the chip and away you go. Just a thought but will speedo chips become the new spacesaver wheels- Nobody wants them. :lol:

My Chip went in the rubbish bin :wink: Bongo runs much better with the 626 speedo :wink:

Just begun to remove my speedo chip and its all done but mine has 5 wires. There is a grey one which is joined to a green/red wire that comes from the loom but now i've remove the chip I cannot work out what to do with the green/red wire as it doesn't seem to have been connected to anywhere at the bare end.The grey wire from the chip says its for the ECU output. Should i just leave the bare green/red wire unconnected ?
