Bongo Fury

Yep! That's what i fitted... Basically picking up on Mikes (Mikeonb4c) idea for a scav fan override switch.. I basically took a feed to power some led's if & when it ever came on..

I tapped into the same live wire (green/yellow) Going through the rubber membrane where the drive shift thing goes trough under the glory hole following the accelerator cable to where the 2 wires for the scav fan split from the main loom..


Then making a small hole just where it splits at the main loom i ran the wire down inside the loom cover to the bottom where it was easier to tap into the wire just above the connector to the fan & taping the whole thing back up like it never happened...!



Lucky i have an inspection pit, you really need to get the vehicle up off the floor in order to get at it...



I fitted a blue led to flash for the alarm, & some reds in a faulty gutted plasma dial that the gauge company didn't want back during a replacement... (left hand gauge in the glory hole cover.) Now the reds light up when i lock momentarily (about 4 seconds) off the second channel of the mirror fold module then the blue alarmed light flash takes over...
I also have another fake alarm led pulse box in line with the red leds, which is what causes em to flash if the scav fan comes on..!

It goes nowhere near the ECU 5volt system...!

I melted m scavenger fan switch on Saturday. Now replaced, but I must fit a relay to handle the power

Mike, you may need to re think how you route the power to the scavenger fan in case by some sheer fluke the sensor triggers it too!!

well done that man, it will be interesting to see how often they come on. it would be such a shame if all that work was for nothing.
thats a good idea to use a pulse box,(might have to pinch that idea if i may) .

Ady, After all that, probably not at all, i don't think the scav has ever come on... I've been over the coolant system with a temp sensor, even checked the header tank temp with it after a "batting"... Seems normal.. Just thought i might as well do something with a few bits i had knocking about after pulling the seats up for a couple of days in my spare time with a few bits & bobs lying about in the garage...

I got the flasher unit in a bargain bucket a year ago where i bought the strip LED's for the back... I used the blue LED's off it for the alarm & to back-light the drivers window switch, & used it to power the red warnings...

Can't wait for an over heat!

i dont even think the dam scavy fan would come on then, i think it has a hidden use that we have not discovered yet. im sure mine came on the other week when i had a good 4 wheel drift on racing the local taxi's round the towns one way system,i think its there to get a good smoke trail------like the red arrows----only just the one colour .

Meant to be 60 od ish degrees C stuck in the traffic...?? I do alot of that!

I've had that happen once - doesn't seem to be a problem as it just means the fan stays on via its primary (sensor driven) switching route even though the 2ndary route is also active. Bit disconcerting at first mind you!

I think my scav fan has kicked in maybe 5 times in as many years jamie, yet i still want to do a similar mod myself Up for a bit of a brain picking at the big bash mate?

This may sound like a stupid question but what's a scavenger fan. where is it and what's it do? (That's three stupid questions )

It's an annoying person that follows you around begging for food and scraps (like children, but bigger).

The bongo has a scavenger fan fitted too... It's basically sat on the front of the engine, and is activated by a sensor near the gear selector... The fan activates when the engine BAY temps are running hot, the fan switches on, it moves the air around in the metal parachute that is known as the engine bay, and helps extract hot air.

It's a large fan, which you can see in its casing if you get underneath the Bongo just ahead of hte engine bay, whose specifica purpose is to purge hot air out of the engine bay. It should only come on (in a healthy Bongo) when (for example) the bay gets v. hot through hard engine working followed by standing still so passing airflow no longer moves air through the engine bay. This hot air wil also cause the car intrerior to be harder to keep cool as it warms the tunnel between the sits (inverted bowl capturing rising hot air). So I opted to fit an over-ride switch so I could use the fan when I felt, even though the engine bay temp might still be fine for the engine, that the car might remain cooler for having it on. Mind you, I'm not sure but does it come on anyway when you use the aircon (which woud suggest the Mazda designers thought likewise).
