ABS Light on

ABS light came on, didn't have time to look at it and it was going in for some other work so I let them take a look. It came back with new pads on and no warning light.

However the light came back on about 10 miles later

I've had a quick read on here and can confirm that all the brake lights are working correctly and no fancy bulbs have been installed. The ABS light has been on for most of the time since, although I did stop at the supermarket for 10 minutes and when I set off again from there the light had gone off, however it came back on a few miles later. It came on whilst accelerating without touching the brakes.

My guess is a sensor or the wiring to a sensor.

I thought I'd give the diagnostics a go but can't get anything from that! Is there any particular order to connect things? I tried:

Starting the engine
Putting the wire in between GND and TBS
Putting an LED between B+ and FBS

I don't seem to get anything from the LED. Does the LED have to be anything special? I tried two random unmarked LEDs that I had but no idea what voltage they are meant for. I also tried a test lamp but that didn't light either.

Also should the ABS light flash when the link wire is put in? I think I read about the engine light doing that but I've not seen anything about the ABS light.

Forget that, I worked it out.

You have to connect the wire first, then turn on the ignition. The ABS light flashes, so no need for the LED at all.

Now to work out what I need to do to fix the front left wheel sensor!

Don't think I can do anything more tonight in the dark, so in preparation for tomorrow, I have a few questions!


I've read about the resistance that a working sensor should read at, so I can unplug the sensor and check that tomorrow.
I can visually check the rotor to ensure that looks OK.

What about the wiring to the sensor, can I check that at all? What should I expect that way?

Any other checks that I can do?

I haven’t done this on the bongo, but did have the same problem (ABS light) on my wife’s Honda civic. After a quick read on the relevent Honda forum, it was suggested that i take resistance readings of all 4 sensors. Was a fairly quick job to unplug each one & put a multi-metre across the terminals. I can’t remember what the readings were, but was easy to spot the odd one out (i think it had a zero reading). It was then just a matter of ordering one off ebay for £16.49 & fitting it.
Apparently if we’d taken it to a Honda dealer, i would’ve cost £75 to plug it into their computer to get the relevent code, £100 for a genuine sensor & £200 for fitting. All prices plus VAT = total price over £450!!!!!

Yes, that's the idea for tomorrow. Although the diagnostics has told me that it is the front left sensor. I've read that they should be 1600ohms ish. So I will check that one first. However if it all checks out then it might be the wiring going back.

I'll also check that the sensor is located properly and that it hasn't got dirt stuck on the sensor.

These sensors seem to be about £200 new

Had the same on a newish Mini. One sensor wire had corroded and separated from the sensor. £16 ish to replace and easy push fit into Hub. Be interesting to know if there are alternatives to the bongo £200 part that would work. I wonder if Cutlass can help?

Had a quick check - the sensor that the diagnostics is reporting does seem to be dead. The multimeter shows an open circuit between the two pins on the connector.

Tested the front off side to double check I had the meter set correctly and got a reading of 1580 which seems to be about right.

So I'm not worried about the wiring back to the ECU etc. now but it could still be the wiring between the plug where I tested and the sensor or it could be the sensor itself. A quick visual check of the wiring looks OK but doesn't really show much. Next job is to get the sensor out and test it on the bench and properly check wiring.

So next question...

How do you remove the sensor?!

Not sure how to remove the sensor on the bongo, but on the civic i removed a 10mm bolt & then had to use a drift to knock it out. It was so well jammed in that i pretty much destroyed it in the process! This is obviously OK if its being replaced but of no use if you want to test & then re-fit it.

The code given from the light is 12. Which is front passenger sensor. I have confirmed this with a multimeter which shows an open circuit. The bongo is a facelift 1999 4wd diesel.
