Bongo servicing and more required - Surrey Hants boder

Post by francisvincent » Thu Oct 09, 2014 1:10 pm

Hello all - Joined the world of Bongo a couple of months having purchased a 1999 V6 privately, and loving it. No conversion and a tin top, but came with drive away tent, so more than enough for camping trips. The seller had spent £880 the week before on the aircon and LPG valve to ensure it was in tip top condition. Within days however the valve stuck (as we subsequently found out it was too small for the tank!) and the aircon no longer works.

I had a different lpg valve fitted (via a different installer), but now the LPG system thinks its empty about every 20-25 miles and the only way to overcome this is to pull over, turn off the ignition and start again. The aircon also need to be looked at.

I am in Farnham (GU10), Surrey just on the border with hants and was hoping someone may be able to recommend someone who can help with both my Romano LPG problem and the faulty aircon.

Thanks in eager anticipation.

In Farnham you are relatively near two Bongo expert garages. Discount Trucks south of Newbury and 321Away at Woking. Both can check your aircon, or if it just needs regassing any aircon specialist can do the job.

No idea for the LPG, I have it very successfully on my V6 tintop, but mine is a Prins system. Romano is a very common system and there must be a specialist near you. Once it is fixed the V6 runs superbly and economically on LPG s you should really enjoy your purchase.

If you have the receipt for the recent repairs, might be worth going back to the people who have just done the work (if you trust them of course).

V6 with a well tuned LPG system should run as well as petrol and save you up to 50% per litre. I've got a BRC conversion which I'm very pleased with.

Thanks for your responses.

The original 'repairer' is 125 miles (close to where I bought my Bongo) away and I did visit him to sort the valve he had just fitted. Unfortunately he took it out, failed (again) to see it was not the correct one and sent me on my way, having simply refitted it, claiming to have done the necessary repair. The original problem didnt reoccur till I was close to home, so no time or inclination to go back. Confidence therefore lost after a 250 mile round trip and a day off work. The aircon was OK at that point, but died shortly after...

I then had a new valve fitted more locally, albeit a different brand and it is this that seems to be the problem. The person who fitted this was at best disinterested when we last spoke, hence looking for 'Bongo people', as opposed to more general mechanics...

Think I will give 123etc a go and see if they can recommend a Romano repairer...

Thanks again....

Hi and welcome,

I am just up the road from you in Compton and also have a V6 tintop with LPG. I always go to 321 away in Finchampsted for everything apart from LPG. I work in Kingston so go to Battersea Autogas in London for everything LPG.

There is also Capitol autogas in Littlehampton if you fancy a trip to the seaside.

I am on my second Bongo so if you need any help or advise just shout, my eldest goes to school in Tilford so you may see the Bongo around the place anyway

Good luck!

There is a big lpg supplier in Slough who can service and fix most systems (google them i believe there is only one but the name escapes me)

Aircon you are on the doorstep!! Alton there is a great place AVACS and they fitted replacement compressor and serviced and flushed the whole system and new seals and stuff - works a treat now.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I used the Alton aircon service (above) some years ago and whilst the problem was finally resolved, the job started as 'it will be fixed for around £180', but I ended up spending over £1000 on a car worth £2500. Ouch... Fortunately, I found a local, mobile bloke who fixed 2 leaks on the Bongo without me having to drive anywhere, re-gassed the system and fully tested it over around 3 hours and charged me just £60..
Still not fully sorted the lpg, but have narrowed the problem down to a/the vapouriser at around £220 through an independent near Petersfield. Also found a Bongo specialist (ex importer) near Bordon/Hants for servicing/repairs. Yet to try him, but comes highly recommended.

Rgds....
