Fridge and coolbox please

Post by cobbdu1 » Sun Aug 11, 2019 11:51 am

We have an unconverted Bongo and would like a fridge/coolbox i.e. one that we can connect to an electric hookup when available but that will function well as a coolbox too (when we would use ice blocks). Doesn’t need to be very big. Any recommendations gratefully received.

Thank you, though we don’t want to fit it in the Bongo (which I assume the one you suggest is). We want to have the option to leave it at our site for the day if we wish, or bring it with us.

There's this type:

And Lidl/Aldi do their own brands at the start of the season.

Hi
This very much depends on your budget, as thermoelectric cool boxes are relatively cheap in comparison to compressor cool boxes. Thermoelectric often offer both 12v/220v power source options but do be aware that when being powered via 12v they consume a considerable amount of battery power, often running the battery flat in around 10 hours use.
Compressor cool boxes are much more battery friendly often pulling less than 1amp per hour as opposed to 4 amps of the thermoelectric coolbox.
Dometic formerly waeco do a good range of compressor cool boxes, often a good deal can be found on Amazon in their warehouse deals.

We use a Dometic three way cooler.
It runs on 12 and 240 V and gas.
SK Camping sell them.
Great bit of kit , you could even make some ice cubes up in it !

I looked at the dometic 3 way cooler as it looks a nice piece of kit, only running off a leisure battery it pulls 75watts which is around 7 amps so unless your leisure battery has a constant trickle charge it will soon discharge the battery, anything from 6 -12 hours depending on the size of your battery.
A good way to lengthen the life of the battery is to cool the cooler on 220v electric before transferring to 12v, as like the more expensive coolers this one turns itself off once the preset temperature is reached.
