Unconverted!

Post by Supersooty » Wed Oct 17, 2018 7:22 pm

We have had our Bongo, ‘Brian’ three years now. He is unconverted, we hummed and hahed if we should have him ‘done’. We decided to,leave him unconverted and use a drive-away awning as our ‘lounge/diner. When we were shopping around we found the ‘rock and roll bed’ somewhat narrow and did not allow for ‘flailing limbs etc’ 😉. We are now happy with our set up with a Kampa Air Pod VW 2017, with cooking accessories, it is a lounge/diner and is waterproof in 15 minutes. I suppose if your are an avid ‘backwoods camper’ a conversation would apppeal however, if you are ‘backwoods’,it really is back to basics. Just a thought for those who are thinking of converting at a a cost of £3500+. We did have fitted an after-market pop up roof for extra head room and ventilation in Summer.

Yep, an unconverted Bongo is incredibly versatile. 8)

I think the good thing about the Bongo and many MPVs is tailoring it to your needs. I bought the van already converted with an Outback conversion (can be removed pretty easily in about 20mins) which is perfect for camping and as a day van, with a swivel flattened middle seat making a full size bed and onboard cooking and storage. Downside of non conversion is possibly having to cope with the elements (and drying out an awning PITA) rather than parking up and being self-contained. Having sampled a fair few Southern located campsites this year and used the drive-away awning a few times I have now decided to steer well clear of most campsites (far too noisey, packed in like sardines and over priced) and prefer wild camping or weekend or day trips out.....good thing about the Bongo though (with a leisure battery etc) it will adapt easily to many demands.

And when there's two of us and SWMBO wants something better...

... (Eriba Puck) which still cost less than a conversion and tows like it isnt there :-)

And your pitch fee is the same, saves your place, and you have Bongy for a day out.
