Yes that would probably work anything that spread the load on the base of the battery would help. The two examples I've seen had a slot worn across the base of the battery, one was quite sever (7mm deep) and would most definitely have weakened the case, the other was only a couple of mm deep, both batteries had some slack in the clamp but this could have been because the slot had been worn, but I suspect that was the initial cause that then became worse as the depth of the slot increased over time.
