Gas cupboard and drop vents required?

Post by Rebiam » Fri Apr 12, 2013 12:43 pm

Hi all - I have now acquired and installed a removable rear unit which sits on the nearside wheel arch and houses the gas bottle and tanks for the smev combi unit above, as well as space for a few bits and pieces. The unit isn't 'sealed' to the side panel and has a solid base which sits on the carpet. I will swap it for the rear seats as required. Should I be worried about not having a dedicated gas cupboard and drop vent or similar installed? Comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi I have a rear removable kitchen with a gas cupboard, it came with a 3 inch vent which I cut out into the floor. The point of it is, that LPG gas is heavier than air and if you have a leak it could build up at low level without anyone smelling it for a while which could cause an explosive mixture. With the vent in the floor in the cupboard the leaking gas will drop out of the van to atmosphere.

Personally, I'd cut a hole near the base of the gas bottle, and fit a conduit (3" or so) to channel any leaking gas to the van floor, and cut a matching hole in the floor. When the kitchen unit is out, I'd bung the hole to keep the weather out etc.
