No problem. Happy to help.

Yes, the center grey switch wire that is disconnected from the PCB is soldered to the negative wires of the LEDs.

The good thing with this mod is you can easily put it back to standard if needed :)

I reckon the LEDs draw about half the current of the neon.

Well I can vouch it's easy to convert it back..
Thanks again for your advice, I will endeavour to refit the LEDs before next camping season as the bongo is going in storage for the winter.

Just an update.
After your clarification I set to redoing this afternoon, total time spent 10 minutes.. as wires already spliced together and just needed soldering to the correct wire. It now works perfectly...
Thanks again for sharing this handy modification.

An update to this. The panels I originally linked to started to burnt out within 6 months. The usual over bright eBay crap.
I then switched to these, which have a built in heatsink. They are still running fine 18 months later.

Funny enough I had a problem with the glue on the back of the LED coming away from its mounting due to it overheating. I too changed to the heat dissipation ones. I also soldered in the tiny plugs that come on each LED making it a simple job of unplugging and replacing with new LEDs should the need arise.

Yup, you can use a festoon LED replacement in the rear door light. Just make sure you get a decent one with built in heatsink. Some are too fat though and don't fit.
T5 LED replacements will not fit the later Bongos with the U shaped neon tubes.
