Tow ball mounted :Interesting options for storage etc.

Just stumbled on this company by chance. I thought the products were both practical and innovative. Or maybe this is just common camper van stuff you all know about

http://www.bak-rak.com/

Might help someone anyway.

I thought of going down the bak-rak route when I bought my Bongo but never did in the end. I agree though - interesting option, though with the Bongos soft suspension you might end up wanting spring air assisters to help avoid bottoming out, and that all adds to cost. I went down the cheap trailer route instead in the end.

I had a bak-rak mounted unit for my spare wheel, as I have a doughnut LPG tank fitted where the spare wheel should go. Good product easy to remove and refit to towball.

glad you started this thread - I have been thinking of getting one of these for a while.

I think I would be able to fit a box to it and still have room above for my bikes! Any opinions greatly received.

Hi folks.
I have used a Bak Rak successfully for a number of years. It's made from sturdy stainless steel, and is big enough for a storage box and/or bikes. I bought a large storage box from one of the DIY stores, and I strap it to the rack. The rack also comes with extendable bars, to add even more haulage capacity, though I haven't used mine yet.
You'll need a light board, and do exercise care when reversing, because the rack extends the length of the rig by over a metre.

Remember no to exceed the 85kg tow ball limit on Bongy.

Very easy to do with such useful/large storage.

Thanks Ian,

I didn't know that - is there a code or a link to them, or do we just send a message to get the discount?

Thanks

Here's what they said a couple of years ago:

Pete from towbar-mounted bikerack specialists Bak-Rak has been in touch to say that a 10% discount is available for club members. Offer applies to main units only and not to accessories.

I have the Thule tow mounted box which has gone on trips to Italy, Scotland and several festivals. It's been essential for wild camping to give enough space to fold the bed out freely without moving kit around.
