Daylight Running lights Fitted and Light Upgrade

Post by Spencer54 » Sun Jan 04, 2015 9:02 pm

Here are the pics, I'm happy with the result for the money.

So LED strips inserted inside the headlights, LED side light bulbs and upgraded headlight bulbs to Osram Nightbreakers.
Difference is nothing short of amazing. Total cost £25.

Here's one with just the DRL on.

Driving back from the coast tonight was so much better, even in the fog - I could actually see where I was going for once.
Reminded me of switching from 6v lights in my old Beetle to 12v, massive improvement.

I'll post up a How To if there's enough interest.

Looking neat. Intructions = Yes please =D> I've fitted those Nighbreaker bulbs as well. They are indeed a marked improvement, even over previously upgraded bulbs.

Stuc you'll have it done in an hour 8)

I wired mine to the fog light live, that way ignition on and DRL on.
No messing with switches or fuses - one live wire up to the dash and earth them direct to the earth posts right behind the headlights.

Run the wires out of the drain holes in the rubber cap of the headlight this way you have no issues with water ingress.

So as per Stucs thread remove headlights and grill.

Bring the lights indoors, here you have a choice.
Either put the lights in the cooker and warm to 65 degrees or leave the lights to soak in hot water.
Pros and cons of both are that the lights won't melt in hot water if you get the temp wrong or put the grill on. But if your reflectors are peeling as they are old the water can cause them to drop pieces.
I went hot water... You choose, I'd probably go with cooker if I did it again.
You will get longer working time if you use the cooker.

Once warm the mastic will give and the lense will come off.

Once off the led strip fits like it was made for the bongo between the reflector and headlight case.
Touch of decent superglue or similar holds it on at the grill end.

Feed the wires out the bulb hole and through the vent holes in the bulb rubber.

Run + to the fog light + and - to earth posts behind each headlight.

If you want you can reseal the headlights with a silicon or acrylic sealant you can and pound shop has decent stuff in small quantities if you look carefully.

Benefit is that while you're in there you can clean the reflector mine was filthy.

How-to would be great, and links to all the parts.

My old 95 model doesn't have fog lights, just blank plates.. wonder if the wiring is there.. (there is no front fog light switch)

For power go to the switch for your REAR fog light/s not the front.
Tap into that as its generally off the ignition and easy to get to as its retro fitted on import.

If you have a coolant alarm again the power to this will be be at ignition on.

You can use any live which powers up at ignition on, or connect to sidelights + directly then it uses sidelight switch or add a switch yourself. That way you can turn them off if you rather.

Something along these lines would look the part if you want it independent.
