Bike Racks

Post by khisanth » Tue Jul 29, 2014 5:58 pm

Hi all i was wondering if anyone has cycle carrier advice they can share with me.

I have a thule easybase which i use a bag or box for for extra stuff. I am also after a bike rack that i can attach to the back of my bongo securely. The rack needs to be able to hold 1 but maybe 2 if needed.

If possible i would prefer it not to obscure the Number plate so i can use it without the easybase.

Seen a few but i am not sure which would fit and not be a problem.

any help be greatly appreciated

Thule 973 with 973-02 or 973-18 fitting kit, you don't then need to lose or butcher the spoiler if you have one

Fitting kits. You need one to mount the 973 rack on a Bongo

The Avenir Vermont also fits the Bongo without modification to the spoiler or reversing mirror. It relies entirely on straps and the top pads rest on the glass. (The Thule sits entirely on metal parts of the tailgate.) Cheaper (and lighter I think) and I dont think as robust as the Thule 973. Nevertheless I have carried 2 & 3 bikes with an Avenir without event. Available from Halfords. Also seen on ebay.

Yes, the Thule 973 alone is just the rectangular frame and the hinged bit the bikes fit on. In my last picture, the bent bits of tube going up to the top of the tailgate are the fitting kit which varies from car to car.

Hello

Just wondering can you still open the door when the bike rack is fitted (when not having the bikes in it ) ?.

Were thinking about getting bikes to take away

Thanks for the reply :D

With or without bikes on, the tailgate will either sag a bit, or close on its own depending on the state of your gas struts.

A cheap fix for this is to get 2 bits of 32mm PVC waste pipe (B&Q), 325mm long (IIRC) and cut them along their lenght on one side only - so they can be splayed out and slipped over the struts. With the tailgate open slide them forwards over the silver sections, so they drop down and jam the tailgate open. To close it, slip them back over the black sections where they will just stay put, and close the tailgate.

Am just about to fit the 973-18 fitting kit - does anyone remember which vehicle setting they used? I'm guessing the VW T5 might be closest?
thanks!

Great mod for the 32mm pipe on the struts.
