does anyone know what bulbs are in the front courtesy light and if so do they know if there is an led alternative

Forgot to say, LEDs obviously only work one way round so if they don't light up just turn them round. You may need to adjust the wire tails on the W5W bulbs - look into the bulbholder, check where the metal contacts are and bend the wires so they are in the right position (it's obvious when you do it!)

Whilst on this subject,is there a way to get the rear light to come on with
the front courtesy lights when opening the drivers or passenger doors ?

It must be possible, I just don't know where the wires run.

It would be very easy to fit an extra light in the back 'Piggy Backed' off the front light.
