What dates are you going? When I went in 2010 I was advised that the lakes are really busy in August, and best avoided. We took this advice, and went to Lake Bled in Slovenia instead - a real gem of a place.

Re: italian lakes
looks great can you swim in it and where did you stay.
Re: italian lakes
Didn't swim in Maggiore, we just stopped the night and departed the next morning. We arrived just as they were shutting, pitch black, and were welcomed no problem, and shown to a pitch. Woke up to find we were on the lake shore looking out on a fantastic view.
In Slovenia, we stayed a couple of nights at "Camping Bled" which is on the opposite end of Lake Bled to the town of Bled. You can swim, sail, row, etc on the lake. Highly recommended!

Stayed in Europa Bardolino Lake Garda & Camping Europa in Como. Swimming in Lake Garda was ok. Had to in after the damned dog who wouldn't come out!
Not all who wander are lost.
Re: italian lakes
we did go to lake como last summer.
spent 5 nights hehttp://www.campingspiaggia.com/index.php?lang=enre
was lovely if small and lively.
right on the lake, great bar with cheap drinks and excellent food
pitches quite tight, but worth it.
easy to get around as there are buses, boats and trains all right next to the site.
fully recommend

Re: italian lakes
I second Lake Bled!!!! Breathtaking.
Re: italian lakes
Lake Maggoire is absolutely beautiful if you are not surrounded by others. It looks beautiful and the weather has never been anything but sunny for me. There is something extremely relaxing about waking up right alongside the water and having a quick swim (and yes you can certainly swim there, I did no problems).
