If you are going away somewhere and don't mind meeting up with other Bongo owners or if you've been somewhere & want to tell us about it & stick up your photos, put the details here.

Hardknott Pass in the snow

Post by Muzorewa » Tue Feb 24, 2015 4:58 pm

Thanks to Briwy for the footage of this, from the bottom it looked ok and we dismissed the warnings of folk who'd turned around and given up.

Looks like I was struggling for grip at 11:01:20 on the way up.

And you know how hills never look as steep on photos and film as in real life – 11:13:30 – What the......

Plenty of screaming going on in the back of the Bongo. Muzette had her head buried in a pillow and eventually I managed to get Mrs Muz to help by pointing out where the road was likely to be.

Oh, I've changed the offside brake light bulb since too

Just about passable, another half hour and we could have been in big trouble up there.

With not being able to switch the ABS off I was struggling on the downhill sections to keep it below walking pace where the brakes would actually do what I wanted.

One to savour and watch after a few pints

Oh, and I had no idea it was being filmed at the time, a bit of a bonus once I learned that our exploits might be preserved :D

You can't be too careful out there though kids, this is from the Kirkstone Pass the same day...

We've been there in similar conditions but with a sure-footed vehicle with good weight balance you can get through where others can't  Generally the uphill sections aren't the problem, it's gravity taking over on the downhill sections that's the hardest to control

To be clear, the Hardknott pass has gradients of 30%....

....and isn't exactly straightforward in perfect summer conditions. I'm with Mike, don't do this kids, watch some other muppets do it on camera for you

The footage starts at the Hardknott Roman Fort which is about halfway up, and as you can see the conditions don't look too dire. But there's little scope for turning around past that point and once you're at the top you may as well carry on....

Even Bob has been stunned into making an unfunny remark - which says more than steep gradients ever can. He and I will probably sit back on a summers day and sip a cold cider together, re-watching this on YouTube (or DVD if it's on general release by then) and asking ourselves who are these half Muppet half Yeti people who do such unearthly things. Truly, it's a scene worthy of a Bourne movie. =D>
