Re: Tough Northerners - Beef Chilli and Apple/Rhubarb Crumbl
Thanks, Brian/Muz/Ady/Harry!
I've added a couple more things below, of which I'm happy to bring a few... anyone else want to come to the party? Peppers, cheese and sour cream required... Have I missed anything? We should have butter for the bread left over from making the crumble.
Brian - I'll let you judge how many apples to get, depending on size. I was figuring 8 BIG ones.
Harry - could we please borrow a hob on Saturday to cook a cup of rice for ourselves? Also, depending on whether my third dutch oven arrives in time or not, it may be necessary to warm the bread in your oven, if it is to be served warm... would that be okay?
I'll be kicking off around 2pm on the Saturday - a couple of pairs of hands between 2 and 4 would be very much appreciated.
I think I have enough bowls (for prepped ingredients, mixing dough/crumble, etc...), chopping boards, utensils, and work surfaces, though it may require some care to ensure the pot doesn't overflow!!!
The kitchen shelter needs at least one more clothes line prop but for mild drizzle, might look something like this...
Ian - the shelter is just a 3mx2m tarp which itself if pretty modest, but needs an absolute maximum footprint of 6mx3m (20'x10') including guy lines and pegs, in addition to the Quechua behind it. I'd be quite happy to pay an "additional awning fee" - but not knowing the site or the owners, I'm more concerned about the availability of space at the moment... is it worth checking this out with the site? Ideally, I'd like to set up the "outdoor kitchen" when we arrive as I am our party's designated cook for the weekend and I love cooking this way. If we get too much rain, I may become slightly unstuck, otherwise...
(PS - a metal ash bucket, a water bucket, a sand bucket, hi-vis tape on guy lines/pegs and "Caution: HOT" notices are all already in the plan... )

Fine - just don't forget the rhubarb.Northern Bongolow wrote:sounds rubbish, i might not come now.
Right, that's another 18kg of cast iron and the best part of a hundredweight of charcoal on order - all justified as an early birthday present to myself!

Hi,
I've only just seen this great idea.
I seem to be a bit late on providing any food. I've always got a bottle of red wine to contribute.
Will be more than happy to help with the preparation. Will be there by 2pm.
Will also be happy to help in the clearing up.
Looking forward to it.

Cheers, Tony. That'll do fine! Brown sugar would make the crumble extra nice... No need to bring charcoal.
Hi, Marion. Welcome along! If you're able, I'd be grateful for either sour cream or cheese...? No pressure, though - wine is fine! And thanks very much for the offer of help - yes please!
As the head count is now pushing on for 18 and likely to exceed, the recent purchase was for a new pot, 40% larger than my previous "large" one so there should be plenty to go round... in fact, we may want to slightly increase quantities throughout... (assuming it arrives!! )

Better bring the hi vis, safety helmets and steel toe cap boots as well then. Don't want to upset the elf & safety bunch.Driver+Passengers wrote:Thanks, Brian/Muz/Ady/Harry!

Been shopping and got the following:
1½ Kg Plain Flour
1Kg Scottish Porage Oats
1Kg Soft Light Brown Sugar
250gm block Kerrygold Butter
Unloaded the charcoal as requested and loaded the washing line and our Breeze Blocker.
Let me know if you change your mind about the charcoal Matt.

I'll be "fine tuning" the kitchen shelter over the next day or two - it was in a tangle on the ground this morning, and the Quechua was upside down!
I'm picking up four 10kg bags either today or tomorrow. I've not gone for the expensive stuff, but at least I'll have a couple of days to get used to the heat and burn time of whichever brand it is that I've ordered - you're supposed to be able to judge temperature fairly accurately by "counting coals" - I expect that comes with experience - I have little.MountainGoat wrote:Let me know if you change your mind about the charcoal Matt.

Matt - if I get 2 x tins/tubes tomato puree and one each of bay leaves and smoked paprika, will that be enough? I've no idea of quantity needed so let me know if I should up the amount.

No, that'd be plenty! In fact, I've just had a look and we have a large bunch of bay leaves and a nearly-full jar of smoked paprika here. One tube of double-concentrate tomato puree would probably be enough.mikeonb4c wrote:Matt - if I get 2 x tins/tubes tomato puree and one each of bay leaves and smoked paprika, will that be enough? I picked up some tins of evaporated milk that were on special. I'll bring those for peops that may not like custard.
As well as the custard!
