An interesting day out in the 'Middle of Nowhere'

If you are going away somewhere and don't mind meeting up with other Bongo owners or if you've been somewhere & want to tell us about it & stick up your photos, put the details here.

An interesting day out in the 'Middle of Nowhere'

Post by Muzorewa » Mon Sep 26, 2011 12:31 pm

This has been in planning for some time, people who know Harry know that he’s in the Kendal Mountain Rescue and he asked if we would consider volunteering to be in an exercise in the North Yorkshire moors. No problem at all in helping this bunch of volunteers who, when we get stuck, often through our own stupidity, we expect to drop whatever they’re doing and provide a miracle rescue.

The big plan was to have a major rescue exercise which would involve several Mountain Rescue teams. As a sting in the tail, once they had that exercise under control or so they thought, we would initiate our own emergency that would task them with reallocating personnel & equipment to deal with an additional and unexpected incident – all quite possible scenarios when you think about it.

There were some good reasons to pick us, firstly nobody up there would know us (except Harry) so even if they saw us milling around near the pub they wouldn’t know what we were about to do. Secondly we’re a plausible family group and thirdly I was bound to take a heap of photos

So, we were presented with this type of script for the day.... 8)

“Scenario 2 – A grand day out (spoiled)

“Team Muz have decided to have a ‘grand day out’ at Tan Hill.

“Muz, a keen photographer of industrial archaeology, Muz Jr (17) his son who is training for his Duke of Edinburgh and young Muzette (9) have gone off to do some exploring around some old mine workings whilst Mrs Muz takes time to chill out at the pub before the family return for lunch at 12.00 noon.

“By 12.15 Mrs Muz is becoming anxious that the family have not returned for their booked 12.00 lunch table. Muz had said that they would be back by 11.30 and is rarely late for meals. :?

“Meanwhile, Muz had parked up his vehicle and gone off exploring some old mine workings with Jr and Muzette.

“At around 11.00 whilst making their way back to their vehicle Muzette took a tumble and fell into one of the many old pits in the area. Muz & Jr went to help her but she had hurt her right leg and couldn’t put any weight on it. Jr, using his first aid training diagnosed a possible fractured ankle.

“Unable to get a mobile phone signal Muz decided that he would stay and comfort Muzette whilst Jr went for help.

“Jr headed in the general direction of the road arriving on the tarmac at about 11.45 and, unable to drive, then headed back to Tan Hill to raise the alarm.

“He arrives at Tan Hill at about 12.15, he cannot identify the exact location of his father & sister, just the general direction / area and the fact that it took him about 15 minutes to reach the road.

“12.15, worried Mrs Muz has made contact with a police officer at Tan Hill and is escorted to the control room of an ongoing mountain rescue exercise. Jr also turns up around this time.

“The Mountain Rescue controller will want to know where the vehicle is parked, Muzette’s age, possible injuries / medical conditions, clothing etc and should despatch a search team to the area immediately.

“When the search team find Muz & Muzette they will call for the appropriate equipment.

“A medic and stretcher party will then be sent to evacuate them to the roadside for onward transmission to Tan Hill.”

Right then, let’s do it. “See you later dear, we’re just off to photograph some old mine workings, see you for lunch in a couple of hours” :^o

Image
Ok, this seems to be a good spot in the middle of nowhere

Image
“Muzette – come here!!”

Image
She’s in there somewhere, in a makeshift shelter....

Image
....because the weather was, erm, the kind of weather you expect in North Yorkshire

Image
It’s actually quite toasty in here! – but my ankle doesn’t half hurt :^o

Image
I’ll just wait here while Jr goes to get help. At least I’m keeping dry in here

Image
Some considerable time later, Jr arrives back at the pub to raise the alarm....

Image
....and is quizzed at length by the RAF controller to get the best fix on our position 8)

Image
Jr’s information must have been pretty comprehensive because the search party located us quickly....

Image
....and made an assessment of Muzette’s condition....

Image
....called for a medic and stretcher party and deployed a further shelter.

Image
Nothing to do now but await the extraction team

Image
As they were in the middle of a separate exercise, reinforcements took a while to assemble....

Image
....but as soon as they arrived they started getting proper medical equipment in place....

Image
....assembling the stretcher....

Image
....splinting the injured leg....

Image
....and getting ready with thermal blankets.

Image
Stretcher nearly ready to rock & roll 8)

Image
Ready to lift....

Image
One, two, three, LIFT!!

Image
Not easy to lift her out of the ‘hole’ she’d fallen into

Image
Ah, bliss, just lie down and wait to be transported to civilisation

Image
Make sure everything is secure....

Image
....and with that gas stuff they give to pregnant ladies, as Muzette recounted

Image
Ready to go....

Image
....let’s roll!! :D

Image
Because of the inconvenient place we’d chosen to have our little incident, she had to be lifted over a fence

Image
....and then the stretcher needed adjusting back to a sledge....

Image
By this time Jr was anxious. Even in a drill he was worried about his little sister

Image
....Forward!!

Image
Back to the road where ordinarily she would be loaded into an ambulance....

Image
....but job done and she can put her soggy boots back on :D

Image
The scene back at the pub

Many thanks to the participants from these organisations: =D>

I think they may have needed special forces involvement for that one

A big thankyou to Keith who was first on the scene, he talked the usual nonsense to the victim to take their mind off what was happening, as well as being expertly knowledgable on what to do.

Thanks as well to Harry & Trish for providing cakes etc once it was all over :D

And big recognition for all the Mountain Rescue service do, truly the fourth emergency service, and they're all volunteers too 8)

Absolutely brilliant - you guys are brilliantly nuts. And all in the best possible taste.....errrrrr.......interest in your fellow beings.

BUT WAIT...........SOMETHING IS MISSING

I can see no trace of the Bongo in any of the pics, and I'm getting very worried as to its whereabouts. Could it have driven off and down a mineshaft, fuelled by Tan Hill ale and in a fit of depression over years spent in the ownership of complete fruitcases. We're going to need something stronger than the footsoldiers of Swaledale for this one.

Ah, fear not, we did contemplate going in a car but that just wouldn't do now would it?

Check out the right hand side of the pic below, you'll probably see something you recognise, an ideal command & control centre for preparing coffee, Pot Noodles etc..... :D

In addition to my unqualified gratitute to team Muz here is a note from Dave, our Kendal MRT newsletter editor and a member of the search team who found Muzett:

Harry,
As a member of the Renault Trafic Motor Register (admittedly a little bit more paper based than Bongo Fury) I would feel intensely disloyal to register on a Bongo forum. However, I would be grateful if you could add the following to the relevant thread if you think it appropriate…

On behalf of the Kendal Team members on the exercise, could I thank Team Muz again for a highly plausible addition to the day.

To add our perspective to the story:

We had just completed searching our allocated area for the main scenario and were just contemplating where to have a spot of lunch before radioing control to say we had finished and to see if they had more instructions for us, when the message came through asking if we could see a silver Bongo with 3 people inside. We got to it and although we could not see anyone in it we knocked (you never know someone might have been resting their eyelids) just as we called back to control to say it was empty, Muz Jr trudged up to us and told us whereabouts Muz Snr and the Muzette were. 3 team members went straight off, whilst I waited at the road with Muz jr It was still not 100% clear whether this was part of the exercise or not, although knowing Harry to be a cunning old devil, there had been a vague suspicion all day of some sort of twist. An RAF MR team got back to their vehicle and had a spare seat so I packed Muz Jr back to Tan Hill, knowing that he would be better looked after there. A little later, some chums from Kirkby Stephen MRT arrived to bring medical kit and stretcher and after a short disagreement about the Muzette’s name, age and indeed location

“They are over there.”

“The grid reference we were given put them over there.”(points in opposite direction)

“Perhaps you are looking for someone else then? – I will check with control!”

Ten minutes later, the stretcher arrived and the Muzette was (mainly) sledged across the moor.

- The scary looking one

Cheers

Aha, he must have been the guy I was talking to as we headed back to the road.

We also forgot to mention Arthur Littlefair from Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue who made sure we were safe at all times - you can imagine sending us out to get stuck and REALLY getting in a pickle  - big thanks to Arthur.

I was thinking about how unprepared we all are for emergencies, even though we knew what was going to happen, when Mrs Muz was asked what the reg of the Bongo was she didn't know, all she could tell them was it was silver with a bikerack and a Nürburgring sticker on it :?

Although there had been a possibility of a helicopter rescue which would have been great for photos, the eventual stretcher rescue was probably more challenging. Apparently the landowner said no helicopters because of grouse season, yet a Hercules came across really low scattering grouse all over the place - clearly the RAF can do what they want
