710 mile round trip for fish & chips....

If you are going away somewhere and don't mind meeting up with other Bongo owners or if you've been somewhere & want to tell us about it & stick up your photos, put the details here.

710 mile round trip for fish & chips....

Post by Muzorewa » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:19 pm

Well this weekend Muzette had one of her particularly irritating friends around and Mrs Muz suggested that me & Jr might like to disappear for the weekend. No sooner said than done

Anyone who has watched the recent Hairy Bikers series on TV will remember the Anstruther Fish Bar as the ultimate chippy. We thought we should check it out

Image

Image
Up the M6 to Carlisle then across the border on the A7 to Edinburgh

Image
Couldn’t resist this on the way to Galashiels

Image
Haggis machines

Image
Whilst in Edinburgh you have to stop at Lupe Pinto’s for those essential “Friday afternoon” groceries

Image
The rather impressive Fettes College in Edinburgh

Image
Unfortunately the Forth Bridge was undergoing some maintenance, perhaps unsurprising for a 120-year-old structure....

Image
....but the scaffolding makes you wonder how they did it all those years ago

Image
Eight hours later, we’re at the hallowed Anstruther Fish Bar....

Image
....where the fish & chips also had a hint of haggis, not sure how that happened :?

Image
....although the chips were absolutely scrum-diddly-umptious :D

Image
And then to Lower Largo....

Image
....birthplace of Alexander Selkirk, the original Robinson Crusoe

Image
I’ve been looking for a bunch of daffs like this for ages

Image
I think this has been on the forum before, this taken outside its home in Methil, Fife.

Now, think of Cowdenbeath Football Club, Scottish Second Division side. You’ve probably heard James Alexander-Gordon reeling off the results for years now and wondered how tiddly teams like that survive....

Image
Well, look at the Google Maps satellite image of their ground....

Image
....deploy your pace-car in the 18-yard box....

Image
....a recovery truck on the goal line....

Image
....the winner’s podium in the centre circle....

Image
....and have banger-racing after the game

Image
Ever wondered what happens to old minis :?

Image
....or old Sierras: :?

Image
 To liven things up, why not have two classes on track at once, racing in opposite directions – Genius!

The only thing to top that would be to have the football match on at the same time as well

Image
Time for a classy tea at the Shimla Palace, right outside the stadium.

Image
When we were there in 2007 the roof was dodgy....

Image
....and they’ve just got round to doing something about it now

Image
After a night wild-camping at an unspecified location in Clackmannanshire, off round the east coast for breakfast....

Image
....fording through Pease Bay, Berwickshire....

Image
....to Giacopazzis in Eyemouth. But we didn’t have time to wait, we had to be somewhere else before the tide came in....

Image
....Lindisfarne....

Image
....with Lindisfarne castle....

Image
....and Priory.

Image
Then off to Jedburgh Abbey....

Image
....and the Abbey chippy....

Image
....for another haggis-tinged fish & chips. Only in Scotland

Image
Hey Ewe, how many lambs did you have?

Image

Back to England over Carter Bar to Corbridge, Northumberland.

Thanks again Muz.

All the key points from a popping out to the chippy event without having to incur the expense & wear & tear of doing the trip yourself.

Hats off to you.

Fabulous Muz. Going to pick your brain for another trip around Northumberland sometime this year. You certainly take your fish and chips serious. Brilliant pics. Trish

Ady has summed it up perfectly. And your photography goes from stunning to stunninger (is that in Norway?). The Bongo with the dafs is maybe the best I;ve seen yet, the one going acros the ford (or is it fjord?) is almost as good.

It's as much as I can do to lie in bed then do the washing up of a weekend. Hang my head in shame

Blimey - we've done less than that on a weeks holiday

Good for you tho, looks like you had a great time

Next time you fancy a search for gr8 fish n chips try the Start Bay Inn in Torcross (a few miles west of Dartmouth), should be plenty of wild camping locations there as well

It's just a pity Bongos are so unreliable

They say that Kuwait established its oil industry solely so he could be kept supplied with diesel. All we know, is that he's called

The fish was nice, possibly not the best ever but very nice, I think they were struggling for good sized haddock as everyone was getting one-and-a-half fish.

But the chips were without any doubt whatsoever the best I have had anywhere.

Next time you're passing through Fife....

Oddly enough, that was a Shell filling station between Leven and Methil, Fife :?

We were ahead of schedule so left the A1 in search of more interesring scenery. The ford was through the Pease Burn by a holiday park...
