Servicing in the Region

Post by francophile1947 » Mon Jun 07, 2010 8:51 pm

There have been several requests for recommended garages in the region. If you've found one, why not share it and post the name and address/phone number here?

Great Idea :) Although, I can't help as yet, still trying to find out bongo specialists in North London who really know the vans well.

A quick heads-up about Mersh Brothers of Lewisham SE13... they've moved!

They're just in the process of moving to the Bellingham Trading Estate just up the road close to Bellingham train station. They're not opening until this coming Monday the 4th - but for repairs only. They're not going to be doing MOT's for a few weeks until they get things sorted with VOSA. I spoke to a very helpful chap (whose name I promptly forgot) and asked him the shibboleth "how do you bleed a bongo cooling system" to which he promptly gave (one of) the correct answer(s).

Apologies I forgot to look and see which unit No it was, but I'll pick up a card when I take my Bongo in on Monday (I think I'm their first customer)! I think it was an olive green shutter about half way down on the right-hand side.

I'll keep you informed.

Hi All

Our 2L petrol tintop has recently been serviced and MOTd at Lakeside Garage at Wraysbury near Staines. They are specialists who provide superb customer service and we can thoroughly recommend them. We are about 12-15 miles out from the garage but our Bongo was still collected and delivered back by the service manager Darren, who made a detour on his way to and from work to pick it up. Our air filter is different to ones they have used before and it did not arrive that day, so the owner Jay came to the house and fitted it a day or so later. The price for a full service and MOT is very reasonable and our Bongo was returned to us washed and hoovered inside + an MOT Pass certificate.

They are one of our recommended garages on the club website

Earlier this year they did my V6 cambelt, and they've just done a full service and MoT. Bob seems like a good bloke, and certainly knows Bongos.

Just used DRA Services in South Croydon (havign failed to find anyone in North London) - very friendly, very helpful and knowledgeable, have been working on Bongos (and Pajeros, Delicas etc) since first imported. Did My MOT, service, new timing belt, lights, brakes and more very quickly.

Ask for Martin (Howcroft)

We bought our Bongo from Dormans (they imported themselves and we got everything, all the auction spec sheets, the lot so we could see exactly what we got / what they did). They also added a leisure battery and hookup and we've had her serviced and MOT'ed there too. I think they're closely linked to Mazdabongo.com / AVA Leisure.

Anyway - just round the corner from Edenbridge:

Dormans Garage
Blackberry Lane
Dormansland
Surrey
RH7 6NH

They really know their stuff and couldn't be more helpful - we managed to salvage some parts from a Bongo they were breaking when she broke down earlier in the year which saved us a packet.

We don't seem to hear very much about AVA Leisure these days.

I have received parts from them when ordered via Ian and when I ordered pump seals was told that they could do all the pump parts but I've yet to read of anyone taking work to them, for instance cam belt change, hoses/radiator/water pump/ change/bleed, TPS adjustment and auto box servicing.

I would not like to take any Bongo specific job to an uninitiated local garage for them to do their learning on. I've read too many sad tales on here for that. Any place can change oil and filters (hopefully), Bongo exhausts are a doddle, glow plugs require a bit of care but otherwise straightforward. However, I wouldn't let them loose on the cooling system without someone testifying their Bongo skills.

Not wholly sure what the link is but Dormans look after (or so the chap said) about 35 Bongos and they also import directly from Japan and sell (though they stopped for a while as there was little decent quality stock). I think they've a few on their site for sale. As above we bought ours from them and all the parts for the hook-up kit were sourced and fitted from the chaps at MazdaBongo.com (which I think is also AVA Leisure)?

Anyway - Dormans really know their way around the Bongo - when ours went in for her service and MOT, as well as having a fault with the exhaust sorted, she was one of three there all having work done. Not counting the V6 Petrol one they were breaking for parts following the owner putting it into her local garage who b*ggered the engine...

Does anyone have any recent reviews or experience of Mersh brothers or any other garages in SE London ? My bongo overheated at the weekend and I think it may have blown the head gasket. I've got a local garage that I've used before but i'm not 100% confident there know Bongos and they're on closed for holidays.

Nobody seems to mention either Mersh Bros or the place in South Croydon nowadays.

I recently visited County Cars in Portslade and was told cambelt no problem. In fact he had a Bongo right there with the front of the engine exposed, which was what prompted me to ask.

Since then, someone came up to me at a car boot sale and told me that there is a Bongo mechanic somewhere in the Southfleet/New Barn/Longfield area. Unfortunately he has not yet phoned me with the promised details. I am beginnig to suffer from cam belt anxiety as I did not fully believe the story that 'they all get a new cambelt before they leave Japan'.
