2 DIN Drama :-(

Post by NeilW » Tue Aug 10, 2021 4:18 pm

Hi All,

I have a dilemma which I hope someone can advise on... I've had my Bongo a couple of months and now 'need' to replace the Japanese 2 DIN stereo whcih is in there. Menus are all Japanese and the HDD has Japanese MP3 music on it...nice but not really my musical bag. The CD and memrory stick doesn't work.

So, I've succesfully removed it to find that there isn't the connector which I can use the Bongo ISO harness for. The main connector (see photos) is a Clarion 8 pin thing which I searched everwhere for an ISO harness for, with no luck.

I can't even wire my own harness as I need an appropriate plug, which I can't find.

Has any other Bongo owner faced this and resolved it...or do you think I'm stuck with what I have? :-(

Thanks,
Neil

Keep digging back on the cables you will eventually reach the original Mazda loom (wrapped in foam) then depending on the age of your vehicle one of these two adaptors will connect to the ISO standard;
There are two types of adaptor depending on year;
from 1995 to around 2000/2001 it is PC2-10-4,
after 2000/2001 it becomes a PC2-78-4

both types are available on ebay,

Thank you so much for replying...

When looking into the chasm, there is definitely a loom wrapped in foam, but I couldn't work out what was inside the foam wrapping and didnt have the confidence to unwrap it...I'll to that later.

It's a 2004 Bongo, so I should be able to recognise what I'm looking at when I get the foam off.

Fingers crossed it's what we expect! I'll take more photos when I get there :-)

Thank you very much again,

Neil

No need to unwrap the foam, just unplug everything beyond the first connector outside the foam wrapping, thats the Mazda plug, then the adaptor will plug into that and give you the standard ISO plugs to go into any radio.

I think this is how you described it isn't? So does the adapter that I'll buy plug straight into where the wires currently are, or does that white adapter come apart?

So sorry for the basic questions :-(

Thanks again for your guidance.

Yes buy the adaptor, then the other part comes out that goes to the old radio, the new adaptor plugs in in its place and will have the ISO plugs on it.

That connector looks the same as the one I removed and redone with a standard ISO connector kit,, it saves having multiple connectors chucked where they land!

It's a good news story...the suggested adapter did the job, new 2 DIN device (Cheap) fitted and working!

Wish I'd invested a little more in a stereo, these cheap android ones have basic functions but they are crummy haha

Thanks for the guidance.

Be aware that Android devices also have a habit of not turning "Off" and the standby current is often excessive resulting in flat leisure batteries. Not a problem if still on the Ignition switch but a pain when using a LB.

Very grateful to everyone on this thread - thanks to everyone's guidance here, I am aiming to replace my original radio with a updated one.

Our bongo came with what appears to be a decent quality 2x din Pioneer unit with reverse camera. Personally I’m not a fan and would like to switch to a standard 1xdin dab stereo. I could fit a temperature display with bmw clock in the space underneath that way.

Would you like to make me an offer for the pioneer?

I fitted a 2x Din Android unit in ours, Pumpkin was the brand. Has the reverse cam, Sat Nav, hands free etc. Not had any issues with power draw when turned off. The original Japanese unit I remove was a right hoot, lots of flashing lights, and 8 track tape unit and in it’s silver chrome finish was mega bling.
