Universal Joint" for the lower steering rack.

Post by Jimmy spur » Fri Jul 30, 2021 2:51 pm

Had issues with the steering for a week or so. Garage has informed me I need a new Universal Joint for the lower steering rack. I can only find them for nearly £100 via the usual: bongo spares, Mazda bongo.com . Anyone know where I can get one cheeper or is there another different make that fits?. Going through a terrible run of repairs at the moment!

Nothing else is compatible I'm afraid. And I'm not aware of anyone else stocking them. You could get a second hand one from eBay or a dedicated Bongo Breaker, see list here: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=52959

If its just stiff and notchy soak it with WD40 and leave overnight, then keep rotating the steering until it frees off, rinse and repeat.

Mine was exactly the same, gummed up with underseal. No need to spend £100, a £10 tin of WD40 will shift it.

If it's stiff then the little O rings fitted to each needle bearing pack are letting muck in and lube out. The bearings usually start to stick and get squared off.
A good propshaft or similar would be able to supply a rebuild kit if needed.
