Starts perfect runs great when it gets warm or increase revs it smokes blue but smells of diesel but it is a lot better than it was.
Do you time these up on TDC or 10 degrees before.
I suppose it is were the mark on the injection is more important because when the marks on the crank pulley line up to the point on the case the mark / dot on pump pulley are not bang on the mark on the case if you know what i mean .
I don't suspect the main timing gears have been messed with as there is no signs of the front or crank pulley being touched or moved cheers

I think it’s timed at 10 degrees b4 tdc and 1 mm on the dial gauge double check info tho

I think you have to get back on track and build on certainty. get timing spot on so that option can be ticked off then valve clearances and so on then the answer will reveal itself. The pump has been checked out and is ok the mechanicals are ok so it’s got to come down to fuel/air. I had a Renault 1.9 engine that would start first turn of the key run perfect then once I increased revs it would start to smoke like a b*stard really twisted my melon turned out that it was breathing heavily and would stop the oil draining properly from the turbo so that would bypass the seals and trickle into exhaust flow and cause the smoking

cheers guys i will check everything again as soon as the weather picks up a bit.
But trying to find the correct valve clearances is a bit out there 00.5 inlet 0.15 exhaust
They seem to vary were ever you look

Well i have rechecked tappets and timing 2/3/4/5 times i can move the pump to rotation of engine stops or misfires so not that way
when i move toward engine runs a lot better its at the end of the slide its as if it needs to go further over its like the pump needs to come out and go back in like it was on a spline and needs to go one tooth the other way so i have more movement on the slide hole now ticks over ok rev then blue smoke and smells of diesel 50 odd years of working on engines cars / lorry /buses i am now stumped and giving up

Have you checked cam timing it seems you use the first mark on crank pulley then other pulley marks lining up with their respective marks

Actually reading another source if you undo inspection plate at top of bell housing there is a marker for setting cam timing. The injection pump runs in other direction to crank so could make the difference fingers crossed

It’s bang at top of bell housing I think you can get to it by taking air pipe off
