Heating a V6 Petrol

Post by PJ_Bristol » Mon Dec 07, 2020 9:18 pm

Hi guys,

I have fianlly got my van - see my post here - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=77672

My next question is how do I heat it? I have read about a few options:
portable gas heater - seems like a good cheap idea, but my concern is condensation and the need to keep a window open for ventilation, although i did think I could slightly crack the roof open?
diesel heater cons for me are - the extra room it will take up, having diesel in a tank inside the van (are there other mounting options? maybe outside the van?)
propane heater - i am wondering a) if this is a better option than diesel heater, I guess it is greener fuel wise, but have heard condensation can be a problem. I have been thinking of doing an LPG conversion at the same time and hopefully combining the cost savings of labour

Any thoughts welcomed, plus any other ideas

For a diesel option, its normally a small go-kart 3l tank under the bonnet for the fuel, even when you have a diesel vehicle people tend to have a separate tank so that they can use cooking oil for the engine (can't be used with heater).

You can use red in the heater, too.

one thing I thought with having petrol for fuel and diesel for heating is they wont let you fill from two pumps at the same time so I will always have to go up to the kiosk twice at a petrol station!

Worth checking with the assistant next time you fill up.

I've often filled Bongy with diesel then filled a petrol can for the mower, gone in and paid together.

And if you have a small, say 3 ltr, diesel tank it will likely be easier to keep a can to top it up as and when.

I have two of these cookers and just found these heating adaptors for them, anyone ever used one?

I wouldn't recommend gas heating inside, carbon monoxide is a killer.

Re the second one, you would find the gas very expensive. The stoves are really stable, and light easily, but from memory the canisters are only 100 grams of gas for about £1.00 at best.

If you use sites with hook up either a greenhouse heater or oil filled radiator are worth a look.

Hope that helps a bit. 8)

Diesel heater in my v6, 2.5L tank inbetween main battery and aircon evaporator / cabin fan stuff. Fill up a Jerry can then fill from that. It manages about 24 hours continuous on that volume of fuel, it’s a Webasto so might be more efficient than Chinese, only needs a couple of hours tops per day before and after bed so even a small fuel volume is ok, wife is hardly going to want to camp for more than 2 days in autumn winter anyway as wet walking gear is a faff

Afternoon Bongoers

Anyone used a little portable gennie with an electric heater plugged in? Something like this - https://www.screwfix.com/p/impax-im800i ... 230v/15760

Most campsites ban generators, at most only a few hours during daylight is permissible. Whilst they maybe "quiet" others at night won't agree with you!

Yep, no such thing as a 'silent' generator.

Personal view is pay for hook up or use gas.

Just me.
