Front washers not working...

Post by BongoBongo123 » Wed Sep 02, 2020 5:25 pm

I am pulling the left side stem forwards and getting the intermittent wipe but no screenwash.

No motor sounds evident (but I am getting motor sound from the rears), checked tank (full), no leaks that can be seen under bonnet. Was working on fuse box near right knee a few days ago fitting coolant alarm. But fuse intercepted seemingly not the same as indicated here, no loose wires spotted (check that fuse row 2, 7 from left 20 amp - not blown)

viewtopic.php?t=41935

Any other obvious things to check for before further deeper checks ? (not sure where the motors are actually)

cheers

The pumps are fitted into the washer bottle with gromets.

It's not difficult to remove them and I'm pretty sure you can swap them over to check operation, although once out this would be easy on the bench.

The pumps are cheap enough on Flea Bay.

Thanks.. I presume if front motors were working I would be hearing a "whiiirrrrrrrr" as per the rears, funny how you don't notice such things until you need to. Thanks for the info this should be helpful, not looking forward to this one tbh.

I guess need to work out how to get the fluid container out first.

I can't remember how it came out, but it wasn't difficult, just a case of MK1 Eyeball.

May be tight if you have a leisure battery, but that can always come out, too.

Pretty easy to remove the fluid bottle, just a couple of 10mm bolts, just be careful once they’re out to unclip the hose runs as you pull it up carefully - as mentioned definitely easier with LB and tray out of the way

Great thanks, all info helpful.. I cannot help but wonder if something was kncoked when I behind the knee fuse box ( I was quite cautious as I was aware not to pulll things about too much)... but it does not seem to be the case.. wires look in tact and also the relevant 20 amp fuse seems to be fine. (As I gather the wipers are on the same fuse as the screen wash motors and the blades are moving fine)

So most likely is connector, pump or switch maybe, will have to go through it on a quiet day.

I was wondering if there are 2 seperate switches on the stem for washer and wiper or 1 switch that activates both.. I am rather hoping it is not the stem switch. (Wiper works just not the washers jets)

There independent contacts within the stalk, but I don't think they are a separate module as such;
and the next 2 page as well.

When you get to the pump after taking out the washer bottle you can substitute the connections to test the wiring to the pumps. if you switch connectors and the front pump works when operating the rear washers then it must be the front pump wiring and visa versa if it still doesn't work when plugged into the rear wiring it must be the front pump that's not working. if I remember the pumps are different and cannot be interchanged although you could, by switching the wiring and pipework use the rear pump to wash the front screen as that is the more important as a temporary fix. when I pulled all mine out it was the front pump that was seized. it is an easy enough job to strip it down and un-seize it. they place the rear pump above the front pump so that when the rear pump runs dry you know you need to top up the reservoir before the front/lower pump runs dry.

The connectors for the pumps are polarized! Yo can't connect the rear wiring to the front pump or vice-a-versa!

Great... thanks Geoff and all, useful (although I was hoping there was just 1 switch so it seems the stem switch for washer, I cannot rule it out from the outset.) Will start at tank end first after double checking fuse again to be 100pct sure. Just have to work through it bit by bit I guess.
