Anyway, it's off, now whats best to clean it up with, ive some brake and clutch cleaner, some nylon and brass brushes, id assume that would be ok?
Most of the studs wound out with the nuts, 2 studs intact remain in the block and of course the broken one. The bottom stud at the back of the engine (red arrow) wound out but had a lot of oil on it like the stud hole in the block was full of oil? could there be a problem there?

Looks like No1 is an easy grip it and rock it out job, lucky day eh.
The red arrow one is the lowest on the manifold as the engine is tipped backwards slightly, crack on.

I have a liking for the Knipex Cobra wrench, various sizes:

Yes think i have been lucky as theres quite a bit of stud sticking outNorthern Bongolow wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 8:33 pm Looks like No1 is an easy grip it and rock it out job, lucky day eh.

And that makes sense why the oil was collecting in that stud if its essentially at the bottom of the oil leak run
Looks a good bit of kit, but I'll use some good vice grips I think as I don't have the strength to use normal ones really.Bob wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 9:13 pm I have a liking for the Knipex Cobra wrench, various sizes:

Im wondering what to use to clean the face of the exhaust ports on the block too, do they need to be cleaned with a little wire wool does anyone know?

Have a look at the Knipex demo videos, I think you'll find them easier to use than a 'Mole' type wrench.
These aren't normal (cheap) water pump grips.
Here's a linkey:

Re: Exhaust manifold is off! YAY!
Sorry.
Trouble is, once you've owned Knipex tools...
These are good, too. Parallel grip, several sizes, great for things like chrome or stainless fittings:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/KNIPEX-pliers- ... B000X4KP1C
A quick Google will find them a lot cheaper than Amazon.
I keep the smallest sizes of each in my pocket, larger ones in the tool kit.

Re: Exhaust manifold is off! YAY!
Donnie, have you checked that the manifold is not warped, very common for them to bend outwards towards the two end bolt holes? You look to be ok as there is no obvious sooting at either end from what I can see. of course if you get it skimmed you won't need to clean it

I've put it on a glass table and it does look to me that theres a slight rise at both ends It's minimal but its definitely there.JulesMartin wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 10:54 am Donnie, have you checked that the manifold is not warped, very common for them to bend outwards towards the two end bolt holes? Just dropped it off locally, found this place that looks good.
https://vintage-engine.net/
Quoted £55 plus vat and should be ready Friday (but im working) so told him not to rush and Monday would be grand.
In the meantime Ill get the 2 other studs and the broken one out and see where's good to buy new studs. [-o<

All studs now out of the head Came out a bit easier than I was expecting to be honest. I wonder if its been done before too as these studs have equal amounts of thread on them both sides rather than that shown in many bongo gasket kits
