Strange noises

Post by Mitno » Wed Mar 18, 2020 5:36 pm

Hello everone.

I know that this is a perennial area of discussion and having read most of the posts regarding strange whirring noises, I am confident that this particular noise that seems to be coming from the drivers side front on my petrol automatic 2000 Bongo is not:

1) exhaust manifold stud no 1 sheering off
2) loose or worn belts

The noise is intermittent tends to be associated with the engine warming up and does not happen when in neutral only when there is some change in torque - either on acceleration and when the foot is taken off the accelerator. It happens in reverse as well as in drive. Two garages have been unable to sort it and I'm losing hope that it can be sorted. We'd like to sell the car soon so need to get this sorted.

Any advice greatly appreciated. I'm not sure what else it could be.

Hmm, strange.

When you say '2000', is that year 2000 or 2000cc, ie 4cyl?

If it doesn't happen when your NOT in gear then it would suggest that it is something to do with the gearbox beyond the torque converter.
Have you checked the ATF fluid using the dipstick under the drivers seat to check the colour and smell of the Dexron III oil that is used in the gearbox ?

Thank you both

Bob - it was the year 2000 the engine capacity is 2490cc

g8dhe - there seems to be plenty of transmission oil - don't know when it was last changed - anything I should look out for re smell / colour of oil and is it easy to change the transmission oil?

Transmission fluid tends to smell of burnt toast if it's in poor shape, clear colour is a good sign.

Normally checked with the engine up to temp, cycle the selector a few times, then check level with engine running.

Complete opposite of checking engine oil.

OK - I've checked the transmission oil and I don't think there is a problem with it - does not smell burnt and the small amount on the dipstick looked clear and there was enough of it.

One thing that seems to be happening is that the noise only comes on dry days - in the rain it tends to stay away.... not sure waht that means. I wonder:
1) whether there is anything under the front bonnet that might cause it as it seems to be coming from the front of the cabin although it is difficult to locate and sounds can travel
2) what might be behind the foot well on the drivers side that might leak or vibrate in relation to the throttle
3) could there be an issue with the cables that go to the RPM meter?

Clutching at straws at the moment.....

Hi, what sort of noise is it? Is it a ticking or something else?

Wonder if it could be the U/J on the prop shaft making the noise ?

Enzoforever - Thank you for the question..... I can only describe it a s a kind of whirring noise - it sometimes starts when I take my foot off the accelerator and as the revs fall the whirring starts then fades out. On acceleration the whirr comes is at a constant tone and volume then as I ease off the pedal it fades out - put my foot back on and appears again.

I'll see if I can record it on my phone tomorrow.

g8dhe - Thank you again - I'm open to all suggestions - U/J? universal joint? Any thoughts on how I might check this?

Follow the link I gave, then under the vehicle see if there is any excessive play in the joint itself, like wise with the differential end make sure there isn't excessive play.

It's certainly not what I had, it's not the belts in the auto box slipping is it? I get that on initial start up for a minute or so but then it's fine. If something isn't working correctly in your gearbox like a pump maybe, then the ATF fluid is not doing what it's supposed to do. Only a guess, no expert by any means....good luck

Thank you Enzoforever - a pump sounds likely...

Here is the noise recorded the other day - you can here it a couple of times (excude the images, I'm not a pigeon fancier - I just needed something so I could get it on YouTube.

https://youtu.be/lH2R6SAfkic

Will see if I can get the gearbox and the torque converter looked at.

Hi Mitno,

Did you figure out what the noise was from? I get the same noise. I just bought a Bongo.
