Auto Gearbox Codes 16 and 61

Post by MyBongoiscalledDave » Thu Mar 12, 2020 8:13 pm

Hello fellow bongonauts,

Having had a search through the forums, I cant find too much on the following two codes.

16 - EGR valve position sensor
61 - Shift Solenoid B

WIth 16, I assume the position sensor for the erg is on the actual EGR and replacing the EGR valve would sort that problem?

As far as 61 goes, I'm pretty stumped. I feel like this would involve being nearer to the gearbox than I feel comfortable with ... so could anyone help me out with a possible fix?

I'd like to clear the codes and double check that they appear again before committing to repairs. With my 1996 2.5td and it's antiquated diagnostics box, I assume the only way to do this would be to disconnect the negative terminal and pump the foot brake for a while?

Any help to the above questions greatly appreciated .

Kind regards,

Adam

Hello again,

It seems I may have missed the factsheet called 'Shift Solenoid replacements' in the members area. It's extremely useful but i don't believe in myself enough to get stuck in and replace them myself.

I'm going to clear the codes this afternoon and see if they return. Will post back results.

*Update*

Codes cleared. Short drive later, after a couple of miles, the hold light flashed again. got another 61 code but not the 16. This has lead me to think that I might have added the 16 onto the end of a 61 flash sequence. Therefore, I believe that this is the only code.

Equates to Shift solenoid B.

I've had a flick through the factsheet. I'll start by changing the oil, even if i have to change it again hould it not correct the fault. If that doesn't work, I'll check the wiring as far as I cant follow it before it reraches the solenoids themselves. If that doesn't work, are their any gearbox specialists in East Sussex that anyone know of? I'll leave this job to an expert.

Cheers,

Adam

He's known here as Alacrity another Geoff.

Okay, I've determined that it definitely is a 16 and 61.

It's super lumpy on starting up, which is, I reckon the EGR code. It goes into limp mode shortly after starting to drive, which I assume is the Shift Solenoid code.

I asked earlier, but does anyone know how to fix the EGR Valve position sensor code?

I'm going to send it to a gearbox specialist for the Shift Solenoid.

Kind regards,

Adam
