Sediment light but no other lights-mystery?

Post by Four Oaks Bookworm » Thu Mar 12, 2020 11:10 am

Just had the sediment light come on whilst normal driving. No other warning lights, starting and running fine otherwise. Have read a lot on here about alternator issues, but I don't think it can be that as all electrical stuff seems to be working OK, and no problem turning the engine over from cold or warm
thanks

In that case it will just be water in the sediment trap, its main purpose, which needs emptying out. Its screwed in at the bottom of the fuel filter, unplug the wire, unscrew and empty.

Thanks. Complete techie novice here: how easy is this to do without lift/ramp/inspection pit?

Can be done without any raising gear but suggest you were goggles first time so you don't get water/diesel in your eyes. Once you've done it and understand it you'll be able to reach the screw from above and only get your feet wet :D :D :D

Yup its under the drivers seat area, mounted on the outer frame, but first time round its probably best to lay on the ground and look up, but as above when you come to unscrew it, don't have your face below it!

Good idea to pop a tray under it to catch what comes out.

Diesel will damage tarmac and leave a mess on anything else.

Geoff and Bob, I've only done this when changing the filter. when you unscrew the big white plastic screw the initial stuff that comes out is water isn't? I'm thinking that if the OP leaves it too long it will drain out the entire filter or will it stop draining once the float drops back down?

Yes but it won't pour out as I understand it, so once the water/mix has come out then it can be screwed back again.

PLease could someone post a picture of what I'm looking for. It's all a bit black/mucky under there and I can't trace the fuel line from the pump to filter thnks

I've not got a picture but the mechanical diagram is here http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html
you will best see it from underneath (need a torch) and its on the outside engine frame away from the heat of the engine near the side panel under the rear of the drivers seat.

Yes following on from Geoff, from above you'll need to lift the drivers seat and you'll see the large black canister for the air filter. to the rear of that and bolted to the main chassis is the filter in question. it will have two fuel lines one leading backwards towards the rear of the van going into the fuel tank and the other going forwards and into the fuel distribution pump. Once located as already said, best to tackle the job from underneath for the fist time.

Thanks all, I hadn't realised that it was all part of the fuel pump assembly. Drained and as expected, a mix of water/diesel came out (caught most of it!) Replaced the plug, and on ignition, sediment light not illuminated. All good so far

Then on starting, lots of juddering, and motor cut out a couple of times. Also (Sort of) expected, as now a bit of air in the fuel line. But how long should this last? Not responding to throttle at all, and engine just dies on return to idle (now 4-5 times in a row).

What have I missed/broken..??

Someone may know better, but I've an idea there is a primer on top of the pump.

Might be worth trying this to fill the filter bowl and get fuel through then try starting. [-o<

Yes have been pressing the primer button too, but makes no difference. I read somewhere else (factsheet area on here I think) that the pump is self priming anyway?

You may need to crack an injector pipe or 2 to bleed the air out of the system, do it at the injector end then it should fire into life.
