Hi guys and gals
Diesel 2.5 1995... manual... rev counter is zero when engine off, then goes up to 1000 and stays there whatever the revs, and may go back to zero I’d revved hard
Any ideas where to start looking for the fault?

The Rev counter is actually driven from the ECU with the input from the Pulse Generator, either could be at fault. I would see if cleaning the sensor would help to start with. If you have the equipment then check to see if the sensor is generating the right pulse output before suspecting the ECU.

As an add on to Geoff's comments. It's at the front offside of the engine block, held in with a little bolt. Undo bolt and gently pull, it's got an O ring round so don't loose it when you pull it out, clean out the socket and the sensor and return. Check the wire and connections.
Check the alternator belts and wiring too, it could be the start of it failing.

(I'll get a hammer and smash the sensor, then use a screwdriver to slice up the belts on the alternator.)
there aren't enough weekends to keep up with all the things that go wrong!
