Alternator Rectifier

Post by VentnorEng » Sat Feb 08, 2020 11:59 pm

Has anybody been able to source a rectifier for the 2.5tdi alternator, can’t seem to find one anywhere?

Thanks in advance

Have you extracted the old one ? If so how did you remove it ? How do you intend to replace the connections when you install a new one ?

The rectifier for the diesel alternator is part number WL0118W60 and is still available in Japan. But at over £400 just for the recifier I'd get the old alternator refurbished.....

Thanks for the replies

The diodes in the rectifier have blown, do you mean replace the diodes? To refurbish the alternator somebody will need to get hold of the parts.

There is a replacement new alternator on eBay for 94.99 will go for that, shame I can’t get hold of the rectifier as I would have liked to keep that as spare at least. The remaining parts are in good condition and could be broken down into parts.

I looked at the internals of the alternator a few years back, all the diodes and regulator etc. are riveted in place by the electrical connections, there was no way it would be easy to replace the rectifier block or regulator module without grinding out the rivets and then having a suitable press to replace them with new ones into the supports which are part of the framework of the alternator. Pretty sure the alternator must be at least 90 amps.

There are some cheaper 80 amp ones which give trouble.

Whilst we are on the subject of Alternators is there any known correlation between Alternator failure and the use of split chargers and leisure batteries?

No, often blamed because "its been added".
If it does then normally it means it was installed badly or an inadequately rated relay was used, some of the cheap Caravan units aren't intended for motorhome use where much higher currents are found.

Again cheers for the replies guys

Yeah the rectifier bridge is riveted, looks like a nightmare job. Possibly why no rectifier parts have been produced by a third party.

I’ve got the eBay one, probably Chinese but should do the job. £60 to get the original Hitachi one refurbished I’ve been quoted.

Noticed the air con belt and tensioner are missing after pulling off the alternator. Tensioner is also a nightmare to get hold of.

Thanks guys!

Local refurnishing companies can repair them, the modules are available but you need the proper tooling setup to be able to open them up and put them back together. The tooling isn't that special but its not the sort of thing your going to be able to do in a DIY workshop!

Bong Spares will have air con belt tensioners.

I can't see many of these being sold and it's only 2 bolts to fit.

Note the bolts are different lengths, can't remember which one is longer, but fitting gently should prove it.

Before you fit the AC belt, make sure that the compressor is not Seized. That could be the reason for No Belt.

Am I right in that you will need the ignition on and A/C switched on to engage the electro magnetic clutch to test if it is seized or not?

Yes it needs to be engaged to be able to spot that its seized or not.
