Newbie exhaust noise

Post by JulesMartin » Fri Oct 18, 2019 8:16 pm

Hello one and all. just bought my Bongo 96 2.5 TDi three days ago having come from a VW T25 and loving the transition. Aside from all its other issues I'll no doubt be pestering you with in the coming months my main concern at the moment is that it sounds as if it has an exhaust blow as if it was blowing out of a gasket or manifold joint. I've removed the heat shield and can find no tell tale sooty marks around the manifold, Turbo or down pipe. the noise, only apparent on acceleration seems to be coming from the engine area. I have also checked the entire system and all seems ok. I should point out that the noise is only there on acceleration and can't be heard on tick over or revving the engine in neutral. Any help would be really appreciated

Usually no 1 manifold stud, check for soot around the back of the alternator, it's the stud nearest the front usually, check the nut with a spanner, they look ok but the stud maybe snapped.
The manifold is usually warped, pulled away from the front cylinder.
Use the search tab and look for no 1 and manifold and stud., ( The and is important to search for phrases.
Look for a full explanation thread with pics done by me.

Walsall is quite a trot for me but thank you for the suggestion. I have tested the complete system and there is no leak as far as i can see along the entire length. I've not been able to recheck the manifold as suggested but hope to do that in a day or two and will keep all updated. thanks again for the suggestion

You can see the No 1 stud without removing anything, just lift passenger seat.

Managed at last to get out to have another look at the manifold and low and behold sooty marks right at the front and same at the back. Many thanks to Northern Bongolow for the suggestions. I've not had a break in the weather to start the strip down but will let you know the out come in due course.

Probably snapped stud at front. This can be drilled and removed without removing manifold

the front fixing is a bolt and there are 4 studs along the top and a bolt fixing at the back end as far as I can see. I had a can of WD releasing fluid (not WD40) and I used that with the engine running around the gasket and I could clearly see it being blown by the escaping exhaust so certain that it is leaking front and back but all the fixings are tight and in place. I've read here that that the manifold can warp so plan is to stip it down and check it for being warped

Sounds like your on it. To do it right the manifold should be skimmed but others have got by with packing the gasket at the leaking end(s) not the middle, but it sounds like someone has been in before.
Watch out for the turbo mount studs if you pull it all off, there's one that will test your skills.
Good luck.
Can someone post the how to link I did on this yonks ago.
Cheers.

Really big thanks to you both for all your help and perseverance to get the images sorted for me. I use a Mac and had to download Google Chrome and install the fixes but got there in the end. Really big thank you. I've been on quite a few forums over the years for this and that but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest for Comradery and support. Well done. I'll keep you posted on the progress I may even try a few pics of my own :-)
