Changing the rear differential

Post by Gripped » Sat Jun 01, 2019 9:39 pm

Hi all

Has anyone changed a rear differential on a bongo ? Before we sell "old faithful" I want to remove the limited slip diff we put on, and swap it onto the our new V6. We'll put the original diff back on the old van.

So, I know you have to pull the axles out of the hubs enough to clear the diff, but could anyone give me a guide on how to do it?

I am thinking it's fairly straight forward IF you know how !

Thanks in advance

PS - if someone can tell me what to do and I actually do it, I promise to create a fact sheet, complete with pictures of the process - with full credits given to the helpful person. Now there's an offer you can't refuse.

I fitted an LSD very recently to mine, well the garage did. I think its pretty simple having reviewed the workshop manual but just didn’t have anyway of raising the vehicle to do the work

I’ll quote the relevant bits from workshop manual later when I find it again

Much obliged.

yep, A&S in Caerphilly fitted the LSD for me a couple of years back, but I thought I might try and swap them back myself if it isn't too technical. I've got ramps and axle stands, so I reckon it should be fairly straight forward, though draining the diff oil and re-sealing the flange etc will be a pain.

Ok workshop manual wasn’t much use, it didn’t really give a clear description about removing rear half shafts or any of the rear diff. It did show what looks like a circlip behind the brake shroud. It would imagine it would be straight forward if the bongo was new, after 20 years nothing is easy - I actually planned to fit the diff myself initially but took one look at the state of the bolts holding it to the housing and thought better! Garage didn’t enjoy the job too much :)

Maybe someone with more experience will reply but otherwise good luck!

Yeah. Much as I love tinkering, time is precious and I seem to spend too much of it lying under Bongos.
