Turbo Play

Post by WebWiz » Tue May 21, 2019 3:55 pm

Hi Guys,

How much play is acceptable on the turbo bearing? Is it OK as long as the blades don't hit the case?

The chap who just fitted refurb engine pointed it out as something to keep an eye on.

He also pointed out one engine mount is worn out but I'll put that on another thread to keep it tidy.

Sadly a worn bearing will only get worse, changing oil regularly will help a little but it's not worth risking the fans being damaged, as once they go, other than potential damage to other components, it's a long process of flushing out the engine with multiple litres of oil to clean any metal fragments within.
Cheaper in the long run to do it before any permanent damage can be done.
Sorry to be pessimistic but have heard many stories of failed turbos and the subsequent cost of fixing.

Thanks. I've seen refurbs on eBay for £160 plus your old one. Does that sound about right?

Prices do vary, best to shop around, and where possible buy locally, so if a problem should occur you have a better chance of remedy.
