"Pinking" on my 2.0lt petrol bongo
Hi all
Just wondering if any other owners are experiencing the same engine pinking sound at 1500 rpm. I think it's called pinking, it only happens at low revs and when under load, or mainly when the engine is cold. I have tried filling at different fuel stations and some seem to help. Any ideas as to what it is and how it could be resolved.
Thanks in advance

Plugs new-ish and correct? are you using supermarket petrol (I've stopped using it)? How about some Millers/octane booster or Redex on the next fill?

Hello.
Plugs I believe are ok as runs very smooth with a good tick over. I believe it's most prevalent after using supermarket fuel, and having read a few threads on here it would seem it's a common problem.

I’d try the other fuel or additives as suggested

Thanks, will do.

Ha ha, pinking, some of my old customers used to call it jingle bells. (Pre ignition).
Take care.
Take care.

Run mine on the cheap supermarket stuff and it doesn’t ‘pink’. I love that term, to pink, my Dad used it a lot as his Ford Anglia did it all the time

Check your ignition timing. It's in the service book but in Japanese so I can't tell at what mileage. Unlike modern cars, no knock sensor or stick coils on Bongo so there is no way to compensate for wear or fuel quality. I suspect it's never checked over here hence folk having issues as they get older. Mine was a degree out. Needs to be 6 degrees BTDC.

Re: "Pinking" on my 2.0lt petrol bongo
Regarding supermarket petrol. The one time I put it in a petrol car did nothing to persuade me me that the reports
of cars not running well on it were untrue. I had Millers Eco Max in there as well so it probably would have ran like
a bag of spanners if I did not have that in. It seemed to lack poke and refinement compared to standard BP which I normally
put in.
I was under the impression that pinking (like a ticking/rattle-y noise) when accelerating was a symptom of timing or fuel mixture running lean.
Worth doing the easy bits first, maybe change your air filter (which will do no harm in itself).
