2.0 2005 petrol cutting out

Post by ognob » Sun Feb 17, 2019 9:41 pm

Yesterday:

Cool to warm engine pulling up to a junction, went to pull away and realised the engine had stopped

Later that day cool engine, started bongo up to move it out the way, jumped in other car 30 seconds later when back in the bongo it had stopped

Today:

Hot engine (been driving for about 30 mins, on motorway cruising in a 50, engine stopped, I flicked the key (not the starter) and we we up and running again.

This is a new to me bongo, had a full service at a specialist last week.

Fuel cap hisses when opens

Should I be looking at the distributor/ leads. Dont think they were replaced

The ingition switch can be a bit temperamental at times, sometimes take a bit of back and forth to get it to spring into life.

Some sensor issues?

When it’s running it’s fine

But loosing power on a motorway with no hardshoulder and kids on board is no fun - wife not impressed

Any help much appreciated

Hiss from fuel cap is possibly a clue.

Worth loosening it and trying a run. If that works it's likely the vent hole blocked causing a vacuum in the tank. [-o<

I was thinking along the lines that if your van did not behave in that manner prior to the service? Your 2005 shouldl be OBD2 compliant so I think getting the codes read would be a good start for peace of mind. Fact it is cutting out on the move as well is disconcerting, get the ignition switch sorted to eliminate that fault.

Thankyou, would you believe it I do have odb under steering wheel. I also have another diagnostic port under the glove box which threw me off the scent when I got it.

No fault codes found. But it does mean I can potentially use my head unit to monitor stuff over Bluetooth.

I will get the ignition sorted next as it’s something that needs doing and easy to eliminate.

Thankyou all

Yes, do that. Mine had off idle stumble and lots of other issues. Came with full service history from Bongo 'Specialist'. Distributor cap and rotor arm both original items with 116K (miles) on them. No itemisation on history receipts just '12K mile service'; not worth paper written on.
Get it serviced properly or do it yourself to be certain. Parts are easy to get and your 2.0 will thank you for an ignition overhaul at minimum.

Totally agree with that. Some things are worth changing anyway on an old Bongo/car if they look like they've never been done. High Tension ignition stuff definitely falls into that category.

This is exactly what was happening on my V6. In my case, it was definitely a blockage in the fuel vent. Eventually the vacuum made the petrol tank suck in until it bent the fuel pickup and reduced the capacity by 20 litres!

We solved this by drilling a tiny hole in the petrol cap. Then the engine stopped stopping :)

As mentioned in another post, it's worth loosening the cap and seeing if that solves your problem.

If you did not engage the starter ,this is the classic signs of a faulty ignition switch/wiring. I would get this rectified ASAP as this is a very dangerous problem to have it will affect your braking and power steering, and you could be a danger to other road users .

Take care.
