Aircon Compressor Problem?

Post by Ian » Sat Jan 05, 2019 9:56 am

This received from Steve from Wellington, Somerset. He has a 97 diesel Any suggestions?

I've managed to change the aircon belt. But now when I select auto on the heating controls I now get a loud screeching noise and a smell of burning. The noise and smell stop when I switch auto off. The original belt had snapped. I'm wondering if my aircon compressor seizes up when auto is selected. In your experience is that something that happens in Bongos? I've only owned the vehicle for 4 weeks and I've not had one before so I'm new to their problems.

Sure we have seen that reported several times before, also leaving the magnetic clutch un-plugged so it can't be engaged has been reported so that when people re-connect it the same happens.

Thanks for the reply. I've disconnected the lead to the compressor to prevent inadvertent use. I will now search for a replacement compressor. Steve. :D

Welcome aboard Steve. 8)

Bongo Spares, oop north, are reputable suppliers of used, er, Bongo spares, and if you're looking to get the whole job done it's worth considering a jaunt down the M5 to Allan's Vehicle Services, just this side of Plymouth.

Both are well thought of on here.

I've been searching for a replacement compressor and discovered a used one I'm considering purchasing. How do I know if it is compatible? My compressor has a red and a green label with the following information on them. Can anyone tell me what the numbers mean and which numbers do I need to match on the potential replacement please? Also, is there anything else I need to consider when replacing the compressor? Thanks.
RED LABEL: S38A 61 450, 506011 -8610

GREEN LABEL(Damaged and difficult to read, this is as much as I could see) ZEXEL, Type: DKS-17CH, Part No: 06211, 865 9412, 100PG.

Steve, there's an important difference here between an evaporator and a condenser. The Mazda part number S09A61J10 (made under licence by Xexel) is for an evaporator and is shown as 61=J10 on this diagram:

If ordering this part, either second hand or new, you should be aware that it is different for vehicles after October 1997. I think you will find that the (new) genuine Mazda part is no longer available.

I've removed my seized aircon compressor from my 1998 2.5 Diesel. I have been looking for a used replacement without success. So far I have viewed 3 potential replacements that should have been a straight swap. However, in all cases the compressors do not fit the hose couplings on my Bongo.

I visited a Bongo specialist garage today where we compared a diesel and a petrol engine compressor they had removed from their engines. The differences between the two types appeared to be that they had different sized holes for the hose couplings to fit into (and are therefore the compressor units are not interchangeable) and the pulley wheel for the diesel has a single slot and the petrol has multiple ribs (and therefore a diesel belt will not fit a petrol engine and vice versa. It appears my compressor is an amalgam of both types. It has the hose coupling holes of the petrol version and the pulley wheel of the diesel. Does anyone know if my compressor is unique, or is this a standard compressor but issued in limited numbers?

It was suggested that I could get a petrol type compressor and change the pulley wheel. Has anyone on this forum done this - if so how easy was it? I've had a look at a couple of generic Youtube videos about compressor clutch and bearing changes and it seems I may be able to do it myself. However, there was mention of shims (they look like washers) and I'm guessing that I would need some. If so, are they readily available?
