Actuator on top of turbo - 2.5TD

Post by jimmo62 » Wed Oct 31, 2018 5:45 pm

Hi, sorry for a basic question but I'm no turbo expert I'm afraid.

On the top of the turbo unit there is an actuator with a shiny rod on one side and a vacuum pipe on the other - this vacuum pipe is short and connects to one of the main air pipes on the turbo (I think this is the main air outlet pipe of the turbo).

Shuold this rod move either when I rev the engine or if I try to move it with a pair of pliers? It seems to not move under either situation so wondering if it is stuck. I have decent power and fuel consumption so I'm thinking that the turbo is generally working OK

thanks

It’s driven by positive pressure in the output of the turbo and reduces the effect of the turbo when the output pressure is too high. I’ll see if I can dig out an old post with a vid of testing it.

Lots of info in these earlier posts discussing this part of the turbo (Wastegate and its actuator).

A video testing the wastegate actuator using a cycle track pump - for some reason youtube is taking an eon to load this 20 sec clip
