Wheel nuts
I have a v6 year 2000 fitted with alloy wheels.
If I am to get a set of steel wheels for the winter, will the existing wheel nuts be suitable.
If not, any pointers where to get some from.

Re: Wheel nuts
They are most likely different, not sure if Mazda original alloys use the same nuts, and I guess any of the breakers will have them.

No there not suitable the chamfer angle is different between steel and alloys.

That's got me thinking now. Although I changed my skinny spare for a steel, I never considered that the alloy nuts wouldn't fit!

Hmmmm - I've been in the same predicament for years. I suspect (though perhaps techies can confirm) that for limited miles and where common sense is used it'd be ok to use the steel spare with the alloy's wheel nuts.Eratosthenes wrote: ↑Wed Sep 19, 2018 12:03 pm That's got me thinking now. Check the profile of the nuts,I would be surprised (if you have Mazda alloys) that the nuts were different profile for steel wheels.

The alloys on my Bongo were on when imported. They have a Mazda logo on the centre cap and I have seen them on other Bongos and have assumed they were original. When the weather calms down a bit, I will remove a nut and match it to the steel spare ( a Mazda one) and to the steels I should receive next week. I will come back with my findings.

Re: Wheel nuts
That makes a great deal of sense. The wheelnut thing has floated about for years but surely if Mazda have offered Bongos with alloys and a steel skinny spare then the same wheelnuts should work on all wheels at least in those cases.teenmal wrote: ↑Thu Sep 20, 2018 9:33 amEratosthenes wrote: ↑Wed Sep 19, 2018 12:03 pm That's got me thinking now. Re: Wheel nuts
Not sure about the Bongo as i dont have alloys but some manufacturers (Mercedes & Renalt are the 2 that spring to mind first) use different bolts for some of there spare wheels. Many Merc models use shorter bolts for the spare & many Renults use fixed bolts instead of ones with floating washers for the spare. I would have thought it to be very unusual to use nuts with different taper angles though.

Re: Wheel nuts
Just an update, as Teenmal thought, the wheel nuts for the Mazda Alloys do fit the steels fine. Got the wheels balanced and swapped today.teenmal wrote: ↑Thu Sep 20, 2018 9:33 amEratosthenes wrote: ↑Wed Sep 19, 2018 12:03 pm That's got me thinking now. Re: Wheel nuts
Interesting, others in the past have found they don't fit, maybe they weren't Mazda wheels.

Re: Wheel nuts
Just out of interest, the hole for the nut on the skinny spare was identical to the steels.
