2.0 Petrol Smokey

Hello,

I've bought a 2.0 petrol Bongo which seems to smoke a bit (blue-grey) when revved. It's not huge clouds but more of a puff when on the throttle. There is minimal blow-by from the oil filler cap and no smoke out of that when idling with cap off so I'm hoping not rings but not sure?
Is the 2.0 prone to this? I can't find much info on it. Is this engine the same as the Mazda E2000 motor?

Before you start pulling the engine apart .

Have you just purchased vehicle ? private or trade.
When was it MOTT.
Have you put petrol in the vehicle since you purchased it.
Do you know if the previouse owner has been using performance enhancing drugs in the fuel tank.
Has the air filter been change recently and is it clean.
What is the fuel consumption.
Re the engine,this engine if fitted to some Yale fork lift trucks also.

Just guessing... if the compression rings are ok then maybe the oil control rings are gummed up or bores lacquered? You might try an engine flush designed for the job?

Or maybe it needs seals?

Yes, I guess it could be rings but unsure at 116K. It needs a service as the cambelt has 50K on it so I'm doing that first then I'll keep an eye on it. It's hard to assess the smoke as it's more grey/brown than blue and has that 'rich' exhaust smell to it.
Need a manual now but the shop's closed...

I guess if it needs a service then maybe change plugs and air filter to make sure it's not running too rich because of lack of air. Generally the 2.0 ltr are well behaved and robust engines - well that's the info I had that pursuaded me to buy a 2.0 ltr.

Yes, I also liked the idea of the 2.0. I'll do the service as soon as the bits turn up. I can see clean cross-hatch honing marks in the cylinders through the plug holes and the plugs are the ideal tan colour so this is mystifying me. Has fresh MOT so must have passed an emissions test.

Pulled it apart at weekend and found this:

Very sludgy. Head and sump came off next and the valve stem oil seals are rock hard and brittle. Bottom end is excellent.

Feels like a couple of missed oil changes in here and the rest done by the heat. Parts are cheap though so no big deal and seriously addictive to work on; so much room compared to modern tackle.

Great photo, keep posting these (my nerdy side is the internals of engines =P~ ) I can't undrstand why folks skip oil changes or don't change it more frequently than the often quoted 15k miles for modern stuff [-X . Fresh oil and filter on regular basis everytime for my vehicles. I agree, it's so nice to have room to swing a spanner under the Bongo covers. Are you going to add Slick50 or anything?

Thanks, I'll upload some as I go along. Completely agree on long-life servicing. The VW/Audi boards are full of much wailing and gnashing of teeth as a result of that regime. As a Jap bike owner I'm of the 'halve the interval' brigade and it's always worked for me. Bongo will get oil every 5K max given the heat damage under there.
I'll go to a synthetic 5w40 for the first couple of thousand miles and then drop it again. I tend not to do additives as I've no experience of them. Has Slick50 worked for you?

Added it to a Ford Escort 1.6D (do you remember them?) covered nearly 300,000 before the body work gave up. Engine like new and never had any issues. Maybe lucky, who knows. Probably going to add it to Bongo at next oil change.

With head and sump off. Little 2.0 looks lost in there.

Hose at bottom of picture is generic. Anyone know where I can get an original? Hose goes to rear heater.

I used Slick50 in an Austin Maestro. I am a man of expensive and high end vehicles. :lol:

Engine worked fine but it did sound as if it was running slightly different after using it.
If I recall rightly it idled slightly differently and was a little noisier.

I would not use it on the Bongo myself. I think once you use it, it is something that
can never be undone. Whereas regular quality oil changes are easy and a known quantity.

Yes, I tend to agree. No substitute for regular oil changes. More important than the whole sunthetic/semi/mineral debate, in my opinion.

Thanks, more pics to follow but have been let down by a Bongo breaker so have lost a weekend to that nonsense :roll:

In the meantime, just cleaned up the pistons and stuff.

You could probably use your spare time having a look at the piston rings as has been suggested ,you can also check the shell bearings while you are there.
