Anyone done STP EZ Chill DIY air con top up ?

Post by BongoBongo123 » Tue May 08, 2018 12:38 pm

Seems a bout £60.00 at Kwik Fit etc. these days and the DIY kits are about the same but you supposed to get 3 x topups
on average. Anyone with good/bad experiences to report on would be handy.

I think you need a gauge thing on top of the bottle price.

Currently sitting in Kwik fit having mine done. They do a full time and pressure test of the system before filling it again.

Something to do with the cost of the gas. However, 40mins later I have a vacuum tested A/C system that sells nice and is chillier than a big chilly thing ;-)

I tried using EZ chill from Halfrauds a couple of years ago. Can’t say it worked very well. I couldn’t really tell how much gas i was putting in the system - the gauge wasn’t very good. It didn’t seem to go up no matter how much i put in - it wouldn’t increase on the gauge! But I couldn’t tell from the instructions whether i needed to keep the can upright or hold it upside down.
Also there’s a £10 deposit on the can, so you don’t get that back til you empty & return it.
I ended up taking my car to the local garage where they hooked it up to their machine & ran a vacuum test first (at no cost) before they put the gas/oil mixture into it. Cost £50.
I’d suggest trying local places rather than going to the big places like Kwik fit.

Also if you do do-it-yourself, be aware that the gas is really nasty stuff. You don’t want to get it on yourself or breath it in!!!
Thats why the cans have a deposit & have to be returned.

A full can of ez chill will get you a decent functioning and pretty cold A/C system, enough to get you out the poopoo anyway. I used it this weekend as I was in a rush and it worked great.

Ideally it needs a pressure test with nitrogen first and leaving for 30 mins to leak check, then vacuum to boil off and remove moisture, then oiling/gassing up. Without vacuuming it will work, but pressures are higher than normal and efficiency is reduced.

The gas isn't particularly harmful to breath in as long as it's not excessive amounts, it can be harmful of your smoking though as the heat causes a reaction. The main reason you need to be careful are freeze burns and the environment.
We love our rusty Bongo "Billy", despite his many faults!

Thanks for the info thus far, mixed reports. I do ours each year at the moment as it seems to become less effective by 15-20 pct or so and as you know Bongo tends to get very hot in summer due to engine position, uncomfortably so at times. So we find it important to have a maximum cooling air con. I run it in the winter as well to keep the oil moving round.

£60.00 is expensive IMO. Especially if they just top it up a bit. Each time I go no leaks are reported and it stays cooler through the summer.

On the fence a bit.

Thanks I could have waited but we need it running tip top straight away so coughed up at Kwik Fit this time. Read a lot of varied
reports on the DIY bottles.
