Bongo v6 rattle and clatter

Post by Billybongo123 » Thu Mar 08, 2018 8:50 pm

Hello, bought a Bongo couple weeks ago. After only 100km it has started to make a horrific rattle that sounds like either engine or gearbox. Is there anything common that fails on these? It got me home but sounded horrible. Like rod knock but intermittent at times.

Is the rattle/knock in time with engine speed or does it increase the faster you go? or does it increase then decrease slightly through gear changes and increase again.

Do you hear it at a stand still?

I can feel the knock with my feet when stood in the rear, I think it's in bell housing of the auto box? Not the engine?

alacrity is your guy for gearbox issues, however if you're sitting at idle and knocking is occuring i am not sure it is the box.

Have you checked all your oil levels?

It's deffo coming from the torque converter or auto box is say, rather than engine.

The Bongo autobox is generally a sturdy beast. How old is the Bongo and whats the mileage. Have you checked the transmission fliud for condition and level?

Alacrity is based near Eastbourne, in case that helps.

Seems odd it went within 100kms of purchase :-k

It drives etc, it's just this clatter. I'll check a few more things tomorrow, I wonder if there's an easy way to check the flex plate mount bolts etc. First off it sounded like a bolt fell out.

Possibly the transmission mounts or engine mounts, worth a check also the exhaust system. Its very hard without hearing it first hand.

Take Care

check the front crank shaft pulley, or is the starter motor sticking in drive, rattling on the fly wheel.

Hey guys, I think it might be the engine bottom end, in going to drain I'll and look for bearing material today. I'm gutted.
When I listen with engine covers up, sounds like engine is knocking. I'll keep you posted.

It's the bottom end, Mr Motorhome UK has fiddled me. Engines bolloxed. Fed up, all we wanted to do was take little one camping. I now have an 8k paperweight. 😭👎

I'll try and get some money out of him, but not feeling very hopeful, I'll be honest. I'll keep you all posted. Marc

Cheers for that buddy, even though I'm not a motor trader etc he wrote trade sale on the receipt and no warranty given. He didn't give the trade section of v5 though, we did like normal. Not sure if I'm covered or not, but I'm still gutted. Odd issues are normal in old cars but didn't expect an engine failure.

It's a T reg, imported 2010 I think? Converted by well house leisure. It's a lovely conversion with webasto and the lot. Just some of the usual rust to sort, and now this.
Not what I had in mind.
