Heating and cooling

Post by Janner82 » Fri Oct 27, 2017 9:40 am

Hi guys,
I've had my bongo for a few years now but a new issue with it has me stumped and I was hoping you guys could help?
When I start and go on a journey the engine temp gauge will gradually go up as the engine gets hotter. At present it will climb all the way up to the top of the gauge and then I will hear a whining noise and then the temp will come down. It's only at this point however when I get hot air out of the cabin heaters. Could someone explain why I only get heat then please?
My main issue now though is that today the temp gauge didn't go down and no heat came out of the cabin heaters at all, just cold air? When my journey stopped steam was actually coming from underneath the vehicle?!
Could I get some info on what I need to check please?
Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

Sadly I suspect you have a coolant leak and air has got into the system.

Assuming you have a diesel or V6 it is vital to bleed the system after any work, or leak, on the cooling system.

Failing to do this results in an air lock, and commonly overheating and failure of the head. :(

This isn't what you want to hear but it can be fixed, albeit not cheap.

Has your Bongo been looked after by a Bongo Savvy garage? And roughly where are you so we can recommend one?

And welcome to BF. :)

Edit: Looking at your forum name I'd suggest Allan's, Plymouth. 8)

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm originally from Plymouth but I'm now living in a village north of Aberdeen! Haha
My bongo is going into the garage on Monday so I'll let them know comments.
Thanks 😀

Is your garage familiar with Bongos?

It is well worth finding one that is, even if it means travelling.

If not it is vital that they understand the need to find, and fix, the cause of the original overheating and they must follow the bleed process properly.

Far too many won't listen and the problems go on... :(
