Tailpipe fallen off - on hol - can I still drive it?

Post by LauraLloyd » Mon Aug 14, 2017 6:58 pm

In Wales on holiday, live in Truro. Knocked my tailpipe squeezing up a verge and it's come off. Break is exactly on join with the exhaust box bit but pipe itself is a bit torn.

Can I drive to Somerset tomorrow, Devon the next day, and on home without it?
And ultimately, will I be able to get it replaced without a full new exhaust? What's the financial damage??

Thanks techies!

It will be a bit noisy, but you will be able to drive OK.
You will require a new centre & rear exhaust pack, and some gaskets, total cost about £100 plus VAT plus postage plus fitting.

Had to do 300 miles with complete tear in centre. Driving through Hasting's was brilliant, everyone on the seafront was turning round looking for the Hell's Angels. Great sound from the V6.

So you can't just weld it back on? Or weld a new one on? Damn.

Unless I've misunderstood the damage, you only need to replace the back box section. Readily available, cheap to buy, easy DIY job.

If yours is in good nick maybe welding is an option. I'm no expert so I'd take it to your welder for advice. I had an exhaust welded yonks ago, kept it going for a while but eventually rotted around the weld.

Yes the tail pipe section can be welded / replaced providing the silencer has fairly good metal ,otherwise you can get a new back box for under £50.00.

Good Luck.

You can drive without it and meanwhile order a new box ready to fit on your return. It probably broke off because it was corrosion weakened anyway and removal and welding is a poor investment compared with replacement.

I know this is an old post but its relevant to my dilemma.
My back box has sheared off about an inch from the box itself -(i dont know why as it doesnt appear rusty at all ) As it was virtually trailing on the ground and i couldnt get it off myself, my fix it man came out to remove it and he has taken it away to see if he can weld a temporary collar on to re-afix but it turns out he cant do that right now because he has lots of other cars to fix before xmas ( i realise that this isnt ideal and intend to get a new back section asap ) - so i drove it back home and it didnt sound horrendously loud - (well not from where i was sitting but it didnt appear to turn heads as i drove past people) (and actually it drove like a dream) - but i am suposed to be going somewhere for xmas day - about a 20 mile round trip - plus at some point after that will have to take it to be re united with the back box. However having read a few things on the subject i am worried about doing the xmas day thing now.
1. Is it likely to mean exhaust gases entering the cab - there was nothing notable the other day - same 10 mile return journey but i may have a passenger to think about on xmas day.
2. is it potentially going to do some heat related damage too anything else underneath by me running it like that.
3. xmas day being a bonanza for catching drink drivers round here there is a chance police will be around -(i wont be drinking) but how illegal is it to drive without a back box -and does anyone know what would the likely punishment be.
(My alternatives for xmas day now being beans on toast breakfast dinner and tea - or an expensive b&b stay. )

I think you will be fine Karen.

Mine fell off on the M5 some years ago and no probs until I could get it fixed a few days later.

Now this may come across a tad sexist, but, if you bring it to my house on Christmas day, the welder be thrown out of the dining room by my boss as that's where it lives year round to make room for the family meal. Cannot promise a meal but maybe you could offer to wash up while I attempt to weld it back on.
Boxing day, the welder will be back in place, I know it's a tight window but it will also save us buying you a Christmas present and we may give you a Christmas discount on the price.
Reply by nice Xmas card if you wish.
Lots of love, Ady and family.

Poor welder. :?

Put outside all alone at Christmas. :(

It surely should have pride of place by the fire, with it's own little stocking. Perhaps a high flux rod or two, or some fancy new goggles to view it through.
