OIL COOLER AUTOBOX

Post by ELZE » Tue Apr 25, 2017 7:31 pm

I have been told that the V6 has an oil cooler fitted as standard to the auto box, can anyone tell me if that is correct?

If it is I may need a modification as the caravan I pulled this afternoon up a few medium gradients made the box start to smell of very hot oil! smelt a bit like a burnt clutch.

Cheers

They don't have a cooler on the box as std but yes they have an oil cooler fitted (incorporated ) in the bottom of the cooling system radiator.

It would be worthwhile fitting an extra cooler to the vehicle for towing purposes ,hope your not too late.

Good Luck.

Rita is correct, it is likely worth while fitting an additional oil cooler to the auto transmission if you tow a good size trailer.

A sort of mini radiator just for the auto box fluid.

Kenlow and others do them, took me a Sunday morning to fit.

No i do not think I fried it but it was definitely chuffing a bit. No smoke ar anything just the smell I stopped for five minutes or so whilst I checked round the van and the wheel nuts and stuff as you do after the first few miles just as a precaution, that is when I could smell something.

Cheers Bob your a star. do you have any info where you bought yours, part number, invoice or something? How much difference does it make and roughly how much was it? I am asking because if this is going to be expensive I might trade the bugger in for something else  I am fancying a M Class 2.7 D or a Shelander

Mine came from Kenlowe about 4/5 years ago. Their web site suggests they now only supply cooling fans to vehicle manufacturers, can't see oil coolers, but may have missed something.

It was about £200 and at the time several 'Experts' said I'd been ripped off and you can get the same quality much cheaper.

Deamon Tweaks have similar:

And they can be had from China for about sixty quid. Obviously I can't comment on quality.

As sugested, Alacrtiy is your man, a PM might be worth a try, or try chatting to a closer auto box specialist. :)

Thanks again Bob good information as usual :)

I will shop around but as for self fitting that is out of the question, far too old and rickety to be rolling around on the driveway it will cost me a fortune on arthritic pills.

There must be someone local who could do this, I may ask Stuc when I catch up with him but I have lost his number right now

I also fitted one a few years back as I tow a caravan over 1 1/2 tonnes
I got mine and the stainless braded hoses fron eblay £70
Then you need to get a couple of bracket ( right angle ) and 4 big self tappers
There ever so esy to fit 2 hour job
You will need to get spigot hose connector and three of jubilee clips
There is no cut required in the auto transmission hoses
Just remove the return pipe from rad conect it to one side of the new 13 row ally cooler rad and then conect the other side of the new 13 row rad to the existing cooling rad where you took the hose off
Fix your new 13 row ally cooler infront of the existing rad
I will post you some pics in a bit make more sense than me

Gasy that sound great :D pictures are needed. Do you have any links to the ebay stuff you purchased? Are you towing with a diesel? my caravn is 1490 MPTLM. when I towed it, it was not loaded so it would be around 1300 ish but I am towing with a V6 and diesel has more torque Yeh?

Sent you some pics
I will try and explain it again

Looking from front of bongo
It's the left hand hose out of the bottom of the existing rad you want ( 1/2" black rubber hose )
Cut this in half and connect the ends to your new 13 row ally rad
Job done
Don't matter which way you conect it to the new rad

This one with rubber hoses would be easy to connect
£63 aswell

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Aut ... SwopRYc0CJ

The brackets I used were builders fixing brackets from wickes
And 4 of the self tapping roof fixing bolt / screws they drill there own holes and have a bolt head on them some come with a plastic weather cover on them for roofing
But it's tight to get your drill in so I used them on my little 10v torque driver
Remove the front grill for more space
Good luck it's an easy job
Not a lot of fluid runs out when you cut it

But buy some fluid before you start the job, the new cooler will need some.

Level should be checked hot with engine running.
