If you swop an injector from the misfiring cylinder with one from a firing cylinder does the misfire stay on the original misfiring cylinder?
Did you have to transfer the valves from the cracked cylinder head to the replacement head or did it come fitted?
Why are you removong the sump at this point?
You will not be able to acertain piston damage from there.
At what compression will the diesel fail to ignite in the cylinder?
swopped injector mis-fire still there, cant really tell on which cylinder
replacement head came fitted with valves
removing sump to look for play in bearings
seen top off the piston, when had the head off(looked ok) should have checked deck height did not as seen a cracked head.
just thought i would look at bottom end, running out of ideas!

This might sound a bit stupid but, make sure that you are removing the Sump from the Engine not the Gearbox.

It has happened before now

"Managed to get oil pan off. Now can not really see the bearings as the vras( what ever that is)is in the way. this looks a pain to remove."

You need to determine what cylinder has the misfire. With engine running when warm crack the feed to each injector in turn that should help pinpoint the weakest cylinder. Cover the nut before you do it as the fuel is under great pressure.
You need to know fuel delivery is ok hence the injector swop around.

I reckon it would fire but it depends on engine, fuel, engine temp etc loads of factors however if it were to fire it would obviously be a poorer combustion than the others.

If you have access to an air compressor you could feed air into the low cylinder via your compression tester maybe when on comp tdc,a crude leak down test, and listen for air leaking at exhaust tail pipe, inlet manifold and then through dipstick hole might give you an indication of valve sealing. A long shot this but are all the valves at the right height on that cylinder and do they rise and fall on synch?

this is the second head on the block, both has a low valve of around 300psi on cylinder 3. as i think the engine has hydrolocked, would this not suggest a bend rod .

there were 2 very similar but different problems on this thread so I have split the thread as best as I can.

Hopefully it will make it clearer who is being answered :D

It does seem strange that two different heads could have the same issue. It may be a valve problem but I reckon you are going to be taking the headz back off at the end of the day.

evening
played with injectors again, loosening 3 has no efect on running, swapped 1 for 3 and still 3 loosening 3 has no effect on running,
dont think its the injectors, seen adamd post on pulling his botton end, so going to have to take the vras off( oh joy)

I would pull the head first.

having just seen adamd's video, it seems logical to have a look at the bottom end. Would missing shells explain for the lack of compression in cylinder 3. easier to pull the pan than the head :D

It could be the sound in your video but the noise your engine is making doesnt sound like an end more of a miss. An end sounds much harsher.
Having said that you are already in there.

pulled the pan and only small 5mm by 5mm fleck of metal in there, nothing else.
if the shells had have been in there might actually have been relieved

know its been a while!
finally got the vras of the bottom end, no play in bearings, removed shells on 3 and 2 to compare (look good as new), no adnormalities.
Only smalll thing is that the conrod on piston 3 is all the way to the right of the gudgeon pin, whereas on the rest the pistons they can be seen to rest in the middle.
Decided to pull the head(again!)
when removing injector 3 noticed it was wet.
now struggling to remove 2 of the awkward studs in the exhaust.
Anyway thtas where i am up too :D
