Been a while since Bongolia filed a progress report on the Wasp and another post today reminded me i'd meant to check. How's it going Bongolia - did the Wasp get flying in time to join the other wasps of summer (mind you, is it just me or have there been fewer wasps these last few years?)?

Been doing another refurb (a bungalow!) so it has been on the back burner for a bit. I have been running it on trade plates to sort out any bugs etc.
I have it going into a mates garage who is going to do any leveling of the bodywork and get it in primer soon as I have not the time at present. The interior remains unfitted (its a single seater at the moment!) but this is useful for me as I will be taxing it to cart furniture from London to Kent, several trips I would think.
It burbles along quite nicely and there is more power than before the refurb. All in all a very happy bunny!
Comms here are not good, suprising as at first the 4g signal was really good but they seem to switch it off for some reason. I do log i from time to time to keep an eye on you lot though!

Then again Ben new steel might weigh more than old rust :lol:

Great to get an update Bongolia - look forward to seeing next summer's wasp (not many around this year) :-)

Surprisingly, given the condition of the body, the engine was in good nick! Just serviced pistons, didnt need to hone bores, a set of crank and shell bearings general tidying up and inspection really.
It would seem from the reports from Japan, HPI and MOT records etc that the mileage , about 80000mls IIRC, is correct. As this was previously Ian Allens own it was probably very low mileage to start with.
The head was badly coked up possibly from veg oil?
So that was stripped and checked for the infamous cracking, manifolds were matched up but no flowing,exhaust manifold refaced to correct distortion, head gasket was starting to let by and we found a tiny crack in the hose spigot and all gaskets & core plugs renewed.
The injectors matched up (one odd one!) pump was overhauled as was the box, prop UJ`s changed as they were very tight.
Other than that all good!
Next up when all is back and running will be swopping out the rear diff for an LSD and the front diff needs a bearing, then the brakes and that should be that mex wise [-o<
Dave was meticulous in the build and so we let him choose the colours and paint the lump. Ahh bless. :)

Engine and box back in now but everything has ground to a halt while we try and find the brackets etc and dont ask about the cold start valve that seems to be in hiding!
I would guess about two months more and it should be back on the road,looking forward to that.

What are the engine and boxes like to swap? Any tips? I need to swap my v6 lump in a few days. Never worked on a Bongo before, done loads of trucks, buses and cars though. Can't be that bad can it?
We love our rusty Bongo "Billy", despite his many faults!

Drop the engine and box as one. It will come out from the bottom so a vehicle lift would be needed. I have seen a diesel lump pulled out through the top but not a method I would use , it looked a nightmare and the V6 probably worse!

P.S. might be preaching to the converted but if you split box from engine dont forget to unbolt the flex plate and remove the torque converter with the box.

Just getting a start back on the Wasp and I cannot for the life of me remember where these items came from!

im pretty sure that the square one goes up in the front wheel arch. the weird shaped ones look like they are from a similar spot, say cut out for the front anti roll bar or steering rack. cannot see owt on lushprojects though to confirm. :roll:


if not put them aside with the other - - - - spare bits - - - and the essential looking washers that are always left over from jobs like this. 8) 8) :wink:
