ignition interlock?

Post by Darkstar » Sun Sep 06, 2015 8:49 am

Hi guys,

had a quick search but could see anything relevant to my issue.

went to start van this morning and nothing, no click or anything, also had trouble getting the gears out of park, finally got the gears to move but still had no ignition, finally got it to start but no idea of what the issue is. any ideas.

it has a new battery and have had no previous issues only the gear lever being a bit stiff to move our of park sometimes.

not sure if the two are related but thought i would throw it out there just in case anyone has come across the same.

cheers in advance.

I have heard of people having probs with removing the key etc
When the gear stick is stiff
There is a cable from gearstick to foot brake , key
A quick drop of oil at cable ends carnt do any harm
Starting issue might be connected as if it's not in park it won't start

yeah, my thoughts too,

not sure of the mechanics of the interlock, maybe something is sticking somewhere and it thinks its still in gear? but i can still take my key out.

the stiff gear issues only happens once in a while.

Yes I agre
It thinks it's still in gear
I'd start with a bit of lube down them cable ends especially gear stick end
Or give the gear stick a bit of welly back and forwards aswell

My guess is Gasy is on the right track (amazingly I think the whole mechanism is mechanical not electrical but I could be wrong). Keep us posted on this one. Interesting and I suspect increasingly likely to hit old Bongos though probably easily fixed once you know what you're doing. Good luck :-)

Ashamed to admit I've never got the hang of how to look up the diagrams or, when I look at one, understanding what's there. I suspect it helps if you've had a background that involves looking at diagrams   :(

g8dhe, normally i would use the schematics mainly for pre-planned repairs.

but as this was a unexplainable issue, and I was on the way to drop the missus at work, sometimes its quicker to ask someone, as it might of be a quick fix.

As it happens after missus set off on bike, I went out to van and it started.

Anyway as the diagrams show, there are no switches relating to the ignition on them, and all moved freely, however, when i followed the Cable to check if a stone had flicked up and jambed the level on the gearbox, I noticed there is an inhibitor switch on the gearbox level assembly, which when i disconnected, locked the gear lever and prevented turning the engine over.

I've cleaned the connector contacts with contact cleaner, and reassembled.

So two possibilities.

1. the inhibitor switch is on its way out, not sure if you can buy these new.

2. more frightenly im going senile.

two very good possibilities.

As my wife does'nt drive im going to have to give her a check list just in case :|

Sometimes mine doesn't want to come out of Park. Getting more frequent but only ever happens after first start, more often when camping than at home. So not affected by time parked up. So far always sorted with a bit of a jiggle but maybe time to sort it properly.
